Default Advice Please

About a month ago, my passenger door was keyed, and I finally got it into a very reputable paint shop last week. The whole door needed to be repainted, and they finally got it done yesterday (Monday). When I alled today, I was told it was being repainted due to a "problem." Of course I asked for more detail and was told:

Well, you obviously wax your car (I do about 2xmonth) and there has been some reaction with the wax and paint. This is happening around the seals of the door. She mentioned that silicone in the seals was causing the issue. I was told the technician used a chemical to alleviate the problem this time around and hopefully it will work, in which case the car would be done today.

I am worried. Has anybody heard of anything like this before? My car is Suzuka Blue and I have been concerned about the paint match from the get-go.

If I am unhappy with the results, what should I do? Should I take possesion of the car or leave it with them?

Man do I want my car back!

Thanks for the help-- Matt

WTF?!? I have never heard of that before. Wax and paint issues?!? Sounds to me like they screwed up and are trying to cover it by placing the blame else where. Sheesh.....

What I would do is wait it out and then make sure the color match is the same. Definately do not sign for it unless you are fully satisfied. Make sure it looks the same as factory otherwise have them bring it to Honda to get it done right.

Matt -

Without saying too much, can you elude to which shop you took it so I don't make the same mistake?

Thanks. Jim

Sounds like they failed to strip the old paint, including on the insides of the door, and are attempting to shift the blame to you for polishing your car.

It's not really a major problem as long as it is corrected properly.

Thanks guys. I'll see how it looks and let you know. marshajr1 let me see how it turn out first. It might turn out well, and I would hate to bad mouth a company if they come through and do a nice job. If it sucks, trust me I'll let you know who not to visit!

this doesn't seem entirely far fetched... waxes contain chemicals (especially newer acrylic waxes) that could possibly have unexepected results when exposed to paints...

i don't know for sure, but i wouldn't call foul right out of the blocks. if they recognized the problem, fixed it for free, and want to make sure it's right -- isn't that good service? and were they truly blaming you for the problem or just giving you the reason the problem occurred?

even if they flubbed and are fixing it - it sounds to me like they are doing you right.

i wouldn't accept the car if the paint didn't properly match. be sure to view the car in a variety of lighting.

I did not get the feeling they were blaming me for anything. It seems they understand that there was a problem the first time and are trying to fix it. I did not mean to imply that I was getting bad service. Just wanted a plan in case I am not happy with the results.

Don't take the car unless you are happy. Don't pay unless you are happy. Otherwise you have no leverage.

An update:

Finally (after 13 days) got my car back and looks perfect. I can not tell it has been repainted. Had an alarm installed with a proximity detector (2 zone), to hopefully discourage any more vandelous (is that a word?) behavior.
