I've had my car since September of '99, not once experiencing a grind. But this past weekend, I was making a highway trip at an average of about 70-80 mph for roughly two hours. When I took the offramp at my destination and pulled from 5th to 2nd, what a god-awful sound I heard.

I've never had any noise from my tranny. Never happended again, until my return home two days later! Again, only once after exiting the highway.

Have others experienced this scenario? Is this a heat related issue? I know the fix is to replace synchros, but I can't imagine faulty synchros causing this noice to happen only during a specific condition (but I'm no tranny expert either).

Also, is the grind really a "grind"? I mean is what everyone else experiencing a noice like you would hear when the trans isn't all the way in gear and the clutch is released? The only way I can think to describe the sound I heard is like a sick-dog yelp. Very noticeable, my wife heard it even with the top down and the radio cranked. Thanks in advance for any input. Tommy.

It sounds close but I never had the grind downshifting only up.
I drive 30+ highway miles from work at as close to 85 as I can.
When I take my exit, leave the stop sign,
1st gear to 8 or 9k and crunch to 2nd.
But it is fixed now.

I think I nmay have caught it, too. Did some driving last night and had it happen twice. Coulda been driver error, but I've never been a grinder.

The transmission usually only shows the grind problem when hot, and a good way to get it hot is fast driving for a period of time. After two hours on the highway when it was over 100F I have exited and had to double clutch to even use second it was so bad.

I have had the grind when down shifting but much less often. I believe you don

Hey Tommy... me too!

Merging into traffic on I-4 here in Orlando, there is a long sweeping right from which I go from 3rd to 2nd. The first time it did it, I assumed that I did not clutch all the way, but this past weekend, I was aware of the potential grind, was really careful, and wala... big ol grind.

And yes, it was after a 1hr 45min drive. Another problem? I don't know, as I don't have the 1-2 grind that everyone is talking about. Insight... insight would be good.

Has anyone checked their transmission fluid?
Since the S2K tends to run low on oil on some models, maybe the transmission fluid has a tendency to do the same? And since its a hydraulic clutch, lack of sufficient fluid would contribute to poor engagement of the clutch.

Many of us changed the fluid in an attempt to fix the grind. New Honda MTF actually helps because it seems to have higher viscosity than the factory fluid, which in my car was badly broken down.

Have not heard of anyone finding low fluid (where would it go?). The new lube delays the grind because it takes longer to get hot and thin, but it does not solve the problem.

The clutch is a separate system.

I'v always been in the habbit of downshifting through all of the gears. I don't nessisaraly actual engage the gears (let off of the clutch) but it keeps you from trying to drop into too low of a gear.

And having driven big trucks with trailers you learn to use the engine and trans so as not to burn up your breaks in hilly areas.

Does anyone know what clutch parts are they fixing?

I've got the part number on the friction plate but I thought there was something else.
