Aftermarket XM with 2004 Head Unit
--Cross-posted from Electronics--
Hey Folks--
Does anyone know which aftermarket XM receivers are compatible with the stock 2004 head unit? Might Alpine's receivers match (as I understand their CD changers do)?
I still think $400 is a little steep for the stock receiver; I'm seeing receivers on the net for $100-250 (plus antenna). I'm trying to avoid the Roady/XM Commander "pseudo-remote" if the stock HU provides "control/tuning" capability.
Thanks as usual,

One more "ttt"--don't tell me that with all of the technical knowledge out there, that no one has the answer to what should be a simple question...
Help a bro out...

I saw on Honda's web site I believe a picture of their own radio (not aftermarket) and smack dab on the display was XM. I believe Honda is coming out with it. the picture was in a s2000.
Also, just out of curiousity why do you like XM over Sirius ? I had XM for 2 years and dumped it after one day of trying out Sirius. XM usually only devotes one or maybe two channels to a genre but sirius has 4 to 5 ! Techno, Altnerative, rock ... there's just sooo much more I freaked when I got my unit (Ford Expedition, plug play kit).
Not to start a flame war but SIRIUS is so much better I only wish Honda had a sirius radio I could put in. I really hate the thought of some radio tech ripping apart my s2000 so I am sticking with stock for now.

The way I understand XM hardware, you need a receiver and a tuner. Roadys and XM Commanders combine the two.
The '04 S2000's "tuner" (i.e. head unit) is "XM ready." The factory option XM kit supplies the "receiver" for about $400.
So...what I'm looking for is an XM "receiver" that will mate with the '04's stock "tuner"/head unit.
Circuit City has receivers for $100...compatibility?
One last time...anyone?
Thanks

I am really confused as to what exactly you are looking for.
If you want to listen to XM with the OEM radio, it is my understanding that you simply need one additional piece from Honda- that decodes the XM digital signal into an analog signal. That signal is then inputted to the OEM radio just like a CD changer signal.
If Alpine supposedly makes the OEM head, then they undoubtedly manufacture the decoder. You can purchase an Alpine decoder ("tuner") for about $150.00. The question then is, does the aftermarket decoder work with the OEM radio? The only way to find out is to try it- at the risk of damaging either unit unless you really know what you are doing.

See my post from last month when I figured out just how "XM ready" MY04 was.

I decided to go the XM Commander route. I will probably purchase a PIE Aux adapter once they become available for the 04 in February. Should get it this week and install this weekend.

To reiterate Intrepid175's input into the whole "XM component issue":
That's the way I understand it too. The XM "receiver" shown in the installation guide goes in the trunk, and plugs into the factory wiring harness (pre-installed; the install guide shows a connector for the CD changer and for the XM "receiver").
I understand the Honda CD changer is an Alpine unit; I'm hoping that the XM "receiver" is the same (allowing me to buy a sub-$200 unit vice paying $400 for the Honda label).
Has anyone purchased the Honda XM receiver?
Thanks

I'm almost 100% certain that you "do not" replace the factory radio head unit that comes with the car. You do have to purchase the XM receiver. It is a different component from the main AM/FM/CD head unit. The XM receiver then plugs into some accessory port, like the multi disk CD player that mounts in the trunk, and is controlled by the factory head unit that allows you to adjust volume and change channels. While I'm sure you could add an aftermarket XM system to a '00-'03 model year S, I don't think their factory radios have the extra plug to accept this like the '04 models do. You'd probably have to use some type of FM modulator to make it work on the older cars.

One thing you can try doing - remove the OEM Honda headunit and check out what sort of interface it uses for the XM receiver. Then go down to any car audio shop and compare that to whatever the receivers they have use. If they're the same, you're good to go!
