Air box mods....Frankenstien,..any thoughts!
OK....i have had my s2000 for a few weeks and on thing is very clear to me......This car does not breath well at all. I have a thought about removing the to small dead vents in the front bumper and adding flexy tubes to a modified large air box like the one that is stock. I would get rid of the cone filter and use a large rectangle one....this would have a greater surface area and get cold air from the front with a slight ram air effect. I would also have another flexy tube to the fender.
I would be able to close of the ramp air front flexy tubes if it rains...afraid of water intake...the third flexy tube to the fender would be for the rainy days with big puddles.....Has this been tried? Does anybody else think that the s2000 is starved for air. It seems to me its like trying to run a 100 yard dash with a straw in your mouth and your nose plugged. Dam that would suck! I did something similar in my GTI Vr6 97' it had a great effect and was able to spin them good going to second and get a chirp at third......Made my GTI into a real sleeper on the street strips....ok......Starting my project next week i'll take pictures and stuff and let ya know.........please any body got any ideas? Has this been tried.....is the s2000 starved for air?....p.s. anyone know what an s2000 stock air box cost in case my frankenstien is a big f*$# up!

p.s.......I'll draw something up and get it on this thread.....maybe some people will have toughts for the type of parts i should use....i.e. type of square filter of a box from another car i could frankenstien out.....and modify for the "s" Thanks!
I think that the stock air box is a very efficient design to begin with and it breaths just fine. This engine is not starved for air. What it does lack is being fed enough "cold" air. What you propose to do will get you the cold air that the engine needs but there are other much more simplistic ways to do it - ie. a "radmat" and insulating the rubber intake tube.
Go take a rough measurement of the total square inches of filtering area that your cone filter will give you. Then take a rough measurement of how big your single rectangular filter will give you. I think you'll find that the two are very close - not enough to make any difference. For example, the filter that comes with an AEM CAI works exceptionally well (with recorded gains). This is a proven fact. The stock cone filter has about 36 square inches more filtering surface than the AEM one. The limiting factors that give the AEM some advantage over the stock setup are: The size of the stock box, the design of the stock intake tube and the inability of the stock setup to draw cold air. If you keep the stock box, even if you change it, you still have it's original size and location not to mention it feeds the stock intake tube. There will be little if any ram effect because you've got drain holes in the stock box that will reduce or negate any such effect. You're going through a lot of effort and hacking to duplicate what a 5 dollar radmat and 3 bucks of pipe insulation will easily do. You may benefit slightly from "opening up" the inside of the stock box but you already planned to that. (My nickels worth - hey, it's a Canadian nickel.)
ps. for comparison, the twin rectangular air filters off my old 8 liter Viper has just about the same total square inches of area as our cone filter (which feeds only 2 liters). An 8 L engine at only 6500 rpm draws a lot more air than a 2 L one at 9000 rpm.

Thanks viper..........Thats why i come to this board! I'll keep ya posted on what i do.
I just can help but play and try to beat the system. Thanks for the info before i went crazy with the dremel! Has any body ever thought of using cold pack that maybe you could locate in the air box for maybe 30 minutes of nice super chill air?
Thanks ........p.s. Canada is a nice country and planning on a road trip up there to
see a few sites ...any suggestions. I'd be crossing the border form n.y. state! Thanks!
