Default Filling in stock air box

Has anyone thought about filling in your stock air box to reduce the internal volume?

I was planning on rapping the filter in a flexible material essentially creating a tube around the filter extending to both sides of the air box.
Then fill in the remaining areas with a fiberglass style material or 40/40 compound.

The goals would be to reduce the initial air flow lag, reduced heat soak into the box, and increase the sound of the induction process.

I do not think this is a good idea but don't have time to explain now. Short version, the large box gives the engine a lot more air to injest quickly.

It is widely known that even the best cold air intakes provide very small gains in performance on this car. I seriously doubt that any modifications to the OEM box could result in a gain measurable by modern science.

an air duct that channels cool air from the front of the car to the opening in th air box is the best you can do with the stock intake (like a spoon air duct or something similar).

Don't forget about the "heat soak" of the airbox itself...I think XVIPER did a rightup on wrapping the box in insulating foam, and it did reduce intake temperatures with hot. It is also what Spoon has been doing on their racing S2Ks for the 2004 season (wrapping the airbox to keep it cool)

Blanking off the hole that connects with the void behind the airfilter (using a piece of plastic held in place with epoxy) does give a bit more noise and doesn't affect power (either way). I think there are threads on this siste somewhere that give specific details of how to do this if you are interested. IMO that's as far as you should go with modding the stock airbox.

Thanks for the info guys. I am currently using a spoon snorkel but I am going to go with the AEM V2 until I can generate enough funds to go FI.
