I have never personally owned a 911, but I have driven quite a few. My favorite Porsche, that I have had the pleasure of driving, is the 993 C2S. I looked at a few '96 993's (non-S) before going with the S2000. The water-cooled 996 is not as raw as the earlier cars. They did make them more reliable and drivable for the average driver. I love the bulletproof 3.0 SC's, the 3.2 carreras with the G50, and of course the 993's.
If you are looking for an S2000 this is a great time to pick one up. The '03's have most (if not all) of the bugs worked out. Who knows how the rumored '04 2.2L engines will be. Why not drop in on a thursday lunch and meet a few of us.

There is no substitute for open air, top down driving. None. Nothing even comes close.
Is it reliable? After all is said and done, its a Honda and that says a lot. This is the first sportscar that I have ever owned that I rely on to predictably get me to where I am going. I am sure it will start tomorrow and the day after.
Buy it. It is, without a doubt the most thrilling car you will ever own, Porsches included.

Similar to 2old2play, I had a 911 Turbo. Mine was a 1986 (911 STAT), with 2 previous 911SCs before that. First 911 SC was a 1978 light green metallic, then a ~1981 Platinum edition.
For fun and technology I find the S2000 better than the Porsches I have owned. For showoff factor and coolness of the marque, the Porsche cannot be beat. I loved the analog gauge layout, the full leather dash and leather interior, etc of the Porsche, but I think I can go around corners much better with the S2000. Obvious stuff, I guess.
I sold the Porsche because I wasn't driving it and I already had 2 Miatas which I still have.

I recently purchased a 2003 S2K and do not have any intention of replacing the 26 year old 911S sitting in my garage. To me the two vehicles represent opposite ends of the technology spectrum. Yes, the maintenance costs for the 911 are much higher but to the true sports car enthusiasts this doesn't really matter. What matters is a good car on a sunny day at a good speed.
