The engine should be quite a bit more expensive to produce than other Honda engines. For example here are some items not in your standard VTEC engine: carbon fiber reinforced cylinder liners, exhaust VTEC, hollow camshaft, forged (not cast or stamped items (crankshaft, con rods, pistons), fabricated stainless exhaust manifold, chain timing, forged suspension parts. Add to that the frame that stiffens the car.

I'll bet that the margin is a lot thinner than on other Hondas.

The dealers certainly do.
I wonder if Honda makes anything.

Utah -

Where did you get your info? My source is pretty familiar with American Honda. Just thought I'd compare notes.

if it wasn't for all the TSBs, i would say honda is making money on the s2k... but not a big profit margin.
with all the TSBs, i doubt honda corp is making money on the s2k's.
it's like selling computers, some computer companies starts to lose money on the very first technical support call.

honda relies on sales volume very much to cover the fixed and sunk costs for manufacturing a vehicle, but s2ks are more hand made/installed (i think) and the sales volume were probably limited to manufacturing capacity, more than anything... but also marketing reasons.

honda is discontinuing the prelude for low sales volume reasons, but they can probably use the same plant in japan to manufacture other vehicles.
but as for the s2k, i doubt they will end production since nsx won't be out for a while... currently, it's much better to make s2000 than to make nsx (as long as they fix all the design problems)... it usually takes them 2 years to get it better... so my guess is that next year's model will be much more reliable.

IMO

You don't think that the blue will come to the US and then possibly stop production. And what if they come out with a new color somewhere. Seems they like to make sure the colors are passed around to everyone. Could it be that simple?

Yah. For the 2001 model year - what about after that? I'll eat my shorts if there's not a 2002 model year.

What happened to the matrix on S2Ki.COM that showed production numbers and how many were actually shipped into the US? I can't seem to find it anymore.

I can't imagine that Honda is making a mint on these cars. I can imagine that much of this new technology will roll downhill into their other lines and as such, their investment should ultimately pay off.

Honda makes most profit on cars like MDX and Odyssey. S2000 and NSX can barely crack even in profit for Honda! It's sad but it's true. Dealers are the ones making the most profit out of this. Honda does not!

I think S2000 name itself will disappear!! But S2000 based cars will come out. Maybe an Coupe, Sedan and another Roadster to replace the name S2000 itself. The should increase the displacement to 2.2L and make a bit more torque.

Those development cost in the S2000 will go into other production cars from Honda later on! Just like VTEC that first came onto NSX made it's way into other Honda cars.

Honda had to redesign the engine a bit. S2000 engine spins counterclock wise. Other way around from most Honda engines. It uses an special design for S2000 only VTEC. Plus a bunch of other stuff.

I'm actually quite confident that the Blue will arrive. I've been hearing them stopping production in 2003. I highly doubt the glass window will come.
