Wow, I thought it was just me!!!! My back was hurting really bad after I first got the car, and I was kinda upset about it because I thought it was always going to be like that. But it's finally starting not to hurt anymore.
Hey Rick, are you listening? Time for you to manufacture a lumbar support!
My back doesn't qualify for this thread because it's been broken once already. So no matter what car I'm driving, I'm generally not entirely comfortable. But I do support setting the back cushion upright. That's the generally advised position.
Also watch how much your knees are bending when reaching to depress the clutch fully. You never want to be too far from the fully-depressed clutch position as to lock your left knee.
This was discussed in December of 2001, and this was my solution:
"I've added a piece of foam under the center section of the leather seats. I used the real dense type designed to go under a sleeping bag and cut it into a 3" x ~6" strip. Then I gently pull the center section out and feed my strip under, while pulling on it from the opposite side. If you want lots of extra support, double it up. This gives me a lot more comfort, and does not push me out too far and lessen the effect of the side bolsters. It may take some trial and error to find the best place (vertically) for you, but I'm perfectly satisfied with the results."
I never noticed any back problems until I went on a long trip a year ago where I was driving all day long, every day for two weeks. I solved it by putting a rolled up towel behind my back about six inches up from the seat cushion. The only other complaint I had was the seat belt digging into my shoulder after a while.
I thought the back problems was just me until my wife joined me for the last three days and had the same complaint after one day.
