Wow, and I thought I was getting bad gas mileage....

Should I change my plugs?
No, it's a waste of plugs. Replace them at 75-100K.

First thing you do is stop getting on it, start being more event with your throttle and check your tires.

Secondly, stop saying 'half' tank. MPG is miles/gallons = MPG the rest of this 'I get x miles to a tank' is just rubbish.

Third, your civic motor is very different than the F22 motor. This motor is tune for maximum power output. I'm sure you notice the different profiles of the motors. Hence why they are not the same.

Car is rated for 28mpg freeway. Gas light comes on around 11gallons. Meaning you'd see 308 miles on average if you were getting 28mpg and the light would come on. Give or take some variations.

That said refer to my first and second.

FYI - buy the gas with the fewest additives. Chevron is good. If you're getting Shell's new 'oxygenated' gas you're being robbed from. Expect piss poor MPG, similarly seek non-ethanol gas.

I almost consistantly get 20-22mpg with mostly city driving.
Highway I get anywhere from 25-29 usually.

And I'm a leadfoot.

I average 25-26 mpg consistently from 10k miles that I've owned the car, and it now has over 103k. I do 90% freeway, but half of that is bumper to bumper.

MY02 gets around 150-160 miles to half of a tank and 260-270 miles average for a full tank. Iv done a valve adjustment, cleaned my K&N Filter, and have a test pipe. This is mostly highway driving with those miles too. So you mileage seems pretty normal to me!

Driving style, fuel/ethanol blend, tire pressure and rolling resistance, city/highway mix, clean dirty air filters, way too many variables to compare car to car, but in general an AP2 should get ~22 city, ~27 hwy from what I've seen. I've seen city as high as 24, hwy as high as 33, ymmv, literally.

Best thing to do is baseline and start changing things to look for improvements and seasonal trends.

+1

Short suburban commute, just under 24mpg average in cold weather, improving in warmer weather, and I'm granny-driving.

Ever since I got the car at 29k miles, at 100 miles on the trip im at half a tank.
You really need to track MPG. It's not that hard. Reset your trip meter at the next fill. At the following fill jot the miles down on your gas receipt and reset the trip meter (repeat these steps each time you fill up). You then have all you need to calculate MPG for the tank. Just divide miles driven by the gallons indicated on the receipt.

Miles/tank and miles/half tank are pretty useless. The fuel gauge isn't totally linear or accurate. Each fill isn't the same amount of fuel.

Is this normal, is the s2k really that bad for gas mileage?
As stated above mileage depends on a number of factors, including how you drive. Without specifics its difficult to say if what you're seeing is normal. If you're mostly driving in the city it's certainly normal. If you're mostly on the highway it's definitely not.

if you're getting about 20-22mpg combined then that sounds normal.
That's what I get typically and I'm 99% city. I've been able to get up to 33mpg but that was 100% highway on a very long road trip with cruise.

Driving style and where you drive those miles mean more than ANYTHING else.

I get 31-33 MPG highway when it's 90 degrees out and I'm cruising 70 mph with stock tires set at 35 psi.

I get at best 26 MPG highway when it's 20 degrees and the stations are running winter blend gas.

I get around 26 commuting in traffic with lots of stop and go at lights.

I get around 18 MPG on the Dragon.

Incase you haven't noticed the gas guage is weighted heavily to the top, it's really hard to determine anything like that based purely on the gas guage.

I average ~23mpg with 60% hwy and 40% city. Most of that is shifting between 3k and 5k.

I've been testing the different tier 1 gasolines to see which ones give me the best mileage and which ones seem to give me the best performance (via butt dyno).

I only use 3 - Shell, Texaco and Chevron (even thought Texaco and Chevron are the same company). I find that Chevron is the best for performance (butt dyno of course - just seems to make the car a bit more spirited). Shell seems to hold up best for mileage (an extra 2-3 mpg per tank). Texaco is a decent blend of the two. I have filled up with Shell the last 2 times and am averaging about 24mpg. I will do the next two fill ups with Chevron and see how that turns out. I keep rotating them to see if I can come up with anything interesting.
