Bad Gas Mileage
Tire pressure, fuel mix (winter/summer), and driving style all plays a factor. I get 23-25mpg driving 80% highway....I could probably get more if I didn't cruise at 75-80mph.
I run mine at the OEM spec of 32PSI but some people seem to like theirs higher and this can improve MPG, especially if you're doing a lot of highway.

Another thing you should think about, since fuel prices are on the rise again, more and more people will tend to buy more of the lower octane gases than the required 91+ octane fuels to save money.
When this happens the higher octane fuels will sit longer in the tanks and will start to absorb water which will end with you getting a tank full of bad gas and lower MPG. Ethanol fuel has a shelf life of about three weeks before it starts to go bad.

I actually run 89 octane in my S and I get around 260-290 miles per tank. I was running the local 93 oactane from Sunoco and my MPT dropped to around the 240 miles.
Most gas station only have tanks in the ground for 87 and 91-93 octane and use fuel from both to get their middle 89 octane fuels.

I would also like to mention that revving the car a little higher != worse gas mileage. If you have the car floored (WOT) at 1-3kpm, you're going to likely get worse gas mileage than if you drive the car with partial throttle from 1-4.5krpm. I don't have an s2k yet, so I can't comment on my own mileage, but have owned many hondas and typically get on the upper end of mileage figures consistently, with mixed city/highway. Understanding how the car "works" and tailoring your driving habits slightly to them will go a long way (not saying you don't or aren't).
The s2k engine probably "likes" to operate more in the middle rpm range and is probably more "efficient" there, than under 3k rpm. It's fine to baby the car and shift soon, but realize that you could actually see mileage improvements by revving the car a little higher. Leaving the car in gear when slowing down (not downshifting though) keeps the injectors shut and will save a little fuel as well.
