That dripping from the nozzle is easy to deal with... I just shake the nozzle while it's still inserted into the filler neck... I've never spilled any gas on my car. I don't top it off either, of course.

I always take some paper towel and put it under the nozzle as I'm pulling it out.

No, but this would suggest that you do:
when there's a bit too much gas
If you are not "topping up" and you are dealing with "too much gas", this would then suggest that you are not making any attempt whatsoever to tip the nozzle up and over 180 degrees to drain the nozzle tip of gas and allow it a couple of seconds to stop dribbling. Any less than what "might" be in the tip, a drain hole is not necessary. The drain hole is only for those who feel an absolute inclination to continue pumping to get that last bit of fuel into the tank (topping up).
Again, this is NOT a design flaw. It is a user flaw.
So please, explain how you get so much "excess" fuel that you even need a drain hole if you are not doing any of the above. Could this be a case of the user blaming the car for his own ineptness?

Not to defend the "topping off" practice, but I have had a couple of tankfuls where the pump has clicked off, but the gas gauge still is a couple of bars down. I think the point is that sometimes the pumps click off too early.

That said, so what? The only time I ever topped off was at Fall Colors 2003 where they wouldn't let me onto the dealer's lot without a "full" tank. My eyes are rolling.

I eluded to this in another thread. Indeed, it is entirely possible that some pumps may pump at very high flow rates, causing more backflow when near the top OR, it may be set too sensitively and pop early.
Also, the user's fuel up technique may also be responsible for early shut down. This could involve stopping for whatever reason when the tank is not quite full and then starting up again at full trigger. This tends to promote immediate click off. There could also be something odd about that particular car's fuel filler neck. There are multiple hoses in that system. One of the breather hoses may be pinched or plugged with something or have come detached. Any of these can cause a premature pump ejeculation.
I think we've seen by these responses, that generally, S2000s fuel up well on the first squeeze.

It's all about the squeeze.

(uh oh, I think I'm getting silly!)

Hi, Chaz.

Oh, and of course, cases of premature fuel ejeculation can easily be controlled by the "squeeze" as you say.

Don't "top up".
That was my thought.
