Default Bike rack options?

Hey,

I'm planning on purchasing a bike pretty soon and I'd like to take it home with me but my car will not tolerate the dimensions of such.

I've gone around to a couple bike shops around town but all they could show me are some universal trunk racks.

What do you guys use?

Opinions truly appreciated!

chase race hitch and your choice of hitch mount racks. Youre looking at about 300-400 if you can source it all used or ~500 for new everything.

^^ I agree that the Chase Race hitch system is pretty much the only "clean" way of doing things. I've seen the hitch itself go for $420 new, then you will have to obtain a hitch bike carrier as well. Those can range from Walmart type ones for $30-50 to higher end Thule/Yakima/etc for $300+.

The univeral trunk mount ones will work but I haven't heard of one that will not make scratches where the pad contacts the paint. If you don't care too much, that would be the best/easiest/cheapest solution. Unfortunately, I've also heard of cases where the trunk metal warped a bit due to the weight of the rack/bikes.

Check out the Saris Bones rack. I have one that I used to use on my Miata and it worked well. The weight is actually carried on the bumper, not on the trunk (I don't know if that is safe for an S2K or not). It did leave small scratches where the pads touched the paint, but it shouldn't be hard to protect it and avoid that, perhaps with small towels or with some small squares of clear paint protection film.
