Blown engine
^ that's a very straight-forward explanation, but essentially correct. It's a pretty hard thing to do if you have respect for your car, to be honest, but it is one of the definitive "blown engine" situations.
if you don't care to know the details, just know basically...CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL, every few days or so, and you'll be fine.

About 3 days ago, I noticed there was a rattling noise coming from the engine but figured I was going to service my car soon I ignored it. Next day I was taking a friend down this driving range and couldnt help myself n floored it a bit.
I double clutched/rev matched downshift in the VTEC range a few times then i noticed the noise was getting quite serious. I took the car in the next morning for a check up at Honda and they said I blew a crankshaft in the engine and it needs to be replaced (Most likely due to low engine oil).
Now I have 2 options:
1. Replace it with a new engine ($11300AUD which is about $10500 USD plus labour)
2. Find a second hand engine... swap then sell it
I am not an expert at cars but would the blown engine have 'affected' other componenents of the car? IE. Would the car be as good as before if i got a brand new engine?
I love my 02 model s2k, its got about 45000km on it. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I bought my s2000 with a blown motor. None of the junkyards would sell just the motor. only wanted to sell the motor and trans. cheapest I found was 7,500.
Honda wanted 9,500 for a new motor plus labor.
I got my motor and tranny shipped from hmotorsonline.com for 4200 shipped to my door. Yours would be a lil more due to shipping. Comes with a 30 day start up warrenty.

Seriously, is it really that expensive for a car over there?
Whats the average salary of a tech/IT/engineer per year over there? I wanna know if the working man's salary is inflated to match.

Average 2nd level IT support ~$45k-$65k.
Sosoo - have a go and post in the Aus forum. You may find someone there can help you better locally man.
11k for an engine. thats cheap.last time i blew the engine honda australia in 2003 wanted 20k for a complete motor! i just laughed at them and bought a 2nd hand one with 8k on the clock for about 3.5k from memory. doing another rebuild atm. dont expect any change out of 11k tho
Yes I admit I havernt been checking my oil lately for which I will start doing regularly when I have my new engine.
Having said that, my car was just serviced 4 months ago and is not due for service for another 5000km... you'd think that the engine oil would be fine.
I have lodged a complaint with Honda Australia already. Hope they can work something out :/
