Default Blown Engine-Need Advice

Well, Just 1 week before Fall Colors I was out driving in a group, tried to shift from third to fourth and I heard grinding. The engine cut off and a person following me said they saw black smoke coming out of my exhaust. Got it towed, the dealer pulled the head and there is damage to both the block and the head. His first comment was that I overreved the engine which I did not do. The car is out of warranty but I have the extended warranty. The Honda Rep is coming tommorrow or the next day to inspect it. If they determine its my fault it costs me $7500.00 for a new engine. Here's my question, this car has a rev limiter which shuts off the engine when you overrev unless you misshift from a higher gear to a lower gear, right. So I'm not sure if this is really my fault, and I do not drive the car hard. Has anyone had any experience with a situation like this where you are dealing with Honda either with the original warranty of with Honda Care (Extended Warranty). I would like to draw on anyone's experience so I can prepare myself for the inevitable battle. Thanks for any help.

Ray

you definately would have known if you over-reved....

I talked to Jeff, AKA Hardtopguy, on the phone this morning and he told me about this. My guess was oil too but he said that you stay on top of your maintainence. Good luck with the battle. How much was the extended warranty?

The rev limiter will not help you in a down shift situation. In a downshift overrev, the torque of the wheels and transmission are pushing the engine beyond its limits. The rev limiter only helps in situations where cutting the fuel supply will slow down the engine (e.g. upshifts)

Only thing I can think of is that you nailed 2nd instead of fourth.

S2KRAY, are you unsure about whether you hit second or fourth? Second would put the blame on you I think. If you're sure you hit fourth, then it sounds like engine failure. The grinding you say you heard might indicate you hit second though. But third to fourth is the easiest shift to make. I think you should resolve that question with yourself before you head for the dealer. If you imply you MIGHT have hit second, I'd think that would lessen the chance of the warranty covering it.

Sit back and read this before you go and meet with the Honda Rep and remember that they are reading everything you write on this site. Airsport has not had a favorable experience with AHM and neither has many people - Honda has said that Airsports Rod Failure was caused by an Overrev though all his proof says defective part! Good Luck and you will find some good information about what an overrev does to an engine to compare it to your possible damage!

The computer in our cars reads the last RPM rev, right after a sensor goes off. They can determin at what speed and rpm you were going. Pretty soon they will determin if our butts were sweaty too..
