Blown Engine-Need Advice
I dont even know what a shift beeper is or if I have one. I have an 00 model. No engine mods, only a super sprint exhaust and some decals and interior upgrades (Ricks leather and decals) and stereo upgrade. I will just see what happens but will be looking into the short block failure link info tonight with my neighbor who is an attorney.
Hey Pjonk... tell me about your 1st to 2nd grind... I have that problem sporadically and I've heard of others having the same problem... there is recourse through AHM? I have an '02
Ray- I'm really sorry about your car but I like your attitude... no one's dying and in the end *gasp* it is just a car. Sounds like you have a multitude of options if Honda wont budge.. which I'm sure they will... I know of someone recently who cracked the head on his Civic Si and GUESS who paid for it??
I also agree that down shifting from 3rd to 2nd ... although at high mph may sound painful I cant see where ... eh nevermind I dont know what the hell I'm talking about!! GOOD LUCK RAY... see you at Longwood when you're all fixed up.. and this time my friend... YOU LEAD!

Ray, as long as you didn't miss a shift and cause a mechanical over-rev, it is very likely you will get the damage replaced under the extended warranty. This has been the most frequent outcome with the engine failures that I know about. However, there have been a couple of uncovered or 50% covered repairs, even when the owner was sure there was no mechanical over-rev.
What is unusual about your failure report is that the problem presented during a properly executed shift. Most of the "blown engines" I know of, unless they were missed downshifts, happened during cruising or accelerating.
That raises suspicion that perhaps your observation was wrong, and you meant to go from third to fourth, but actually went from third to second. I don't think that you did, but I don't rule it out entirely either.
If, when your engine is disassembled, there is strong evidence of a missed shift and over-rev then that possibility will have to be reconsidered.
Strong evidence for a missed shift constitutes valves bent and valve-striking-piston signs. However, broken rods or similar power train failures would be evidence of engine failure without owner misuse, as I understand it.
Trust me. I'm a doctor. But only trust me about pediatrics, not about automotive mechanics.
Maybe UtahS2K or ultimate lurker can comment or some of the far better educated engine experts on this forum.

Surprised no one said this.....
You said you dont drive your car hard.....there is no way he over revved, becuase 3rd to 2nd, under mild driving isnt gonna do squat to your engine.....I do it all day long......2nd goes to like 52mph

I still argue that I didnt misshift at this particular time but I was redlining in 3rd before shifting to fourth. However, I talked to Hardtoguy and he said that if I misshifted prior to this then that could have started a time bomb ticking and it was only a matter of time before engine failure. Maybe that is what happened as I probably did misshift in the 4 years I have owned the car. I just have to wait and see how merciful they may be. I have already gotten pricing from a source in Baltimore for the block/head and I'm going to compare it to the dealer if I have to pay. How does my extended warranty work if I get a new engine. I'm assuming the engine is covered under the 36K/3Yr and the contract covers everything else?
