The bond between Man and Machine, Father and Son, and an Image you will never forget.
............................. THE PORTAL TO VTEC
.... My 14-year-old son and I just returned from a two-day trip through the mountains of North Georgia and Western Carolina. Members of the Atlanta S2000 Club will tell you these roads were designed with the S2000 in mind. Beautiful vistas, winding mountain drives, switchbacks, well-maintained roads and hardly any police. The purpose of the trip was to accumulate miles so I could break my car in properly and finally VTEC. But, it became so much more than that. There was the bonding of a man with a finely tuned automobile, and the bonding of a father teaching his son and future driver the respect and discipline it takes to truly appreciate a world-class sport car. It also was humbling, as I realized how much a Road Race School could really teach me how to drive this car effectively and efficiently
The S2000 performed flawlessly. I have taken many road trips in my old Porsches, none were this much fun. Even before I could VTEC, the car accelerated well, cornered effortlessly and I always felt in control. But after VTEC, I was taken to an even higher level of driving, one that demanded concentration and respect, yet rewarded me with thrills and a grin that I still cannot wipe from my face. The Valentine 1 proved invaluable, and I thank all those on this forum who recommended it.
To all you young men and potential fathers: teach your children to love and respect fine automobiles. Even though I know absolutely nothing about the mechanics of a car, I know a great car when I spend time in one, and this weekend proved to my son and me that the S2000 is one GREAT sport car.
Your a brave man showing a 14 yr this car's potential. I took my 28 yr old for a VETC ride up to 5th and saw the amazement on his face, but I also commented I won't show this to my 22 yr old daughter cause she not ready to really see what it can do. She's already too much of a lead foot.
Brad, you have to stop with these posts, your making our one-liners look bad!!
Your story reminded me of a drive my father and I went on one time. It was a fond memory, and probably what got me fired up about cars in the first place.
And I will agree with you, they say the best racers don't drive the car, they are the car. If that be the case, I can't imagine a better car to be one with.
Great story Brad. I'm glad both you and your son were able to experience VTEC for the first time. It sure does make the car take on a different personality. Just be careful, or you'll become a vtec-aholic like the rest of us.
Aahhh, the memories that stirs up. Thanks!!!
Me and my Dad when I was about your son's age in Dad's '57 MGA.
I blame him for my open-top car weekness and the feeling that more than a 2-seater is not a car I want in my driveway!
