A "bath mat", Sev? You'll have to elaborate on that. Maybe you mean something like the MuzMat -- to sit under the window when the top is down... Or could you mean a heavy rubberized mat (like the things needed in the bottom of some bathtubs) that you're laying down over most of the collapsed top in lieu of the so-called tonneau cover?

Even if you're not referring to the latter, I wonder if such an approach might be a decent compromise. Or is it unlikely you'd be able to find a big enough rectangle of this heavy rubberized material that would also be heavy enough that it wouldn't blow away in the turbulence? (And if it was heavy enough, it'd probably also be so bulky as to cancel out any other advantages over the OEM product.)

Whoever (Rick...?) is working on producing an alternative to the OEM product, I wonder if using heavy plastic or rubber might work -- something that would effectively just sit on the collapsed top, maybe with cut-out slots to fit down around the "wings" of the roof-frame that protrude at either side of the roof well. Part of the top might end up being exposed, but the window would at least be protected from the UV rays and dust would be kept off most of the interior of the roof. And when the top is up, this contraption could probably be rolled up into a clinder that'd fit in the trench behind the rollbars in front of the rear window. Hmmmm???

I had the same problem. Then I stopped storing the cover in my trunk and just left it in my garage for a while lying flat. When I put it back on, it didn't seem to have the same profile characteristics. It seemed to stay flatter on the car and fit the well more easily.

Just a suggestion.

Stookster, I have the same problem. I am now tucking in the back of the boot all the way around from door to door. I hope this solves the problem. This method seems to give me a better fit.
The dealer showed me how to put it on initially and I think it was incorrect. Their way was to tuck in the back of the boot but the sides lay on top. This let in more air and kept the tabs from gripping the rear.

Here's the lowdown:

A MuzMat in the window well protects the window from vertical scratches on the inside of the window.

A bolster/tube protects the crease in the middle of the window.

Cloth attached to the tube protects from bar indentations on the top and bottom of the window.

Check this out for a great bolster. http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~fredric/bolster.htm
