Build/Arrival Dates: Recent VIN data
I just got a call from my dealer. I have Vin 6620 on order. The build date was 3 June however he informed me it did not ship until 17 June so I suspect it will be some time before it gets here. Perhaps the middle of July. I am not sure why 14 days from build to shippping however I suspect it has to do with the numbers they load on the ship. I have no idea of the transit time from Japan to San Diego but I am guessing 2 weeks. I guess my 4 July S2K trip is off! George

The dealer originally gave me a build date of 25 May. He then updated it and said it was built 3 June. Based on asking several other dealers about incoming cars and build dates I believe the 3 June is correct. It matches up better with the VIN's listed at the start of the tread also. He still thinks I will have it around 4 July but I think middle of the month is more likely. I hope your estimate if better then mine however!
Update to my last update. The dealer called yesterday and said that the car is in Amarillo Texas and should be here by the 1st of June. I have no idea how the car got from Japan to Texas in 4 days. Perhaps your dates are correct. It looks more like mine had to have been built on the 25th of may. Shipped from Japan on the 3rd and then shipped by rail from the port on the 17th. George
Here's a summary of what I know...
Here are some terms that the dealer uses and what they mean:
Build/Production Date: When your S begins the building process in Honda's Takanezawa factory in Japan. This date is essentially your S' birth date. This date can be obtained by the dealer's locator system.
Assignment Date: When your S is fully produced and is officially "assigned" for allocation to the dealer. This date can be obtained by the dealer's inventory system.
Ship Date: When your S is shipped from Japan. This date can be obtained by the dealer's inventory system.
Arrival Date: When your S arrives at your local dealer. After this point, the car is prepped for delivery (Pre-Delivery Inspection). Among other things, you should check for removal of the spring spacers, ask that the spark plugs be torqued to factory specs, etc. There is an extensive dealer delivery checklist located here written by Secret AP1. Just right click and save.
From what I know, the S2000 usually takes anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks from Build Date to Final Arrival. Average time is about 6 weeks.
Once the Ship Date is known, you can expect arrival within 10 to 14 days after the Ship Date.

I think the ship date must actually be the shipping date from the US port of call. I looked at ship sailing schedules from Japan. It looks like its a 12 day trip from there. A faster freighter does about 15 knots or 330 nm a day. The distance from Japan to San Diego is almost 5000 miles. That might explain why I have a ship date of 17 Jun and the car was in Texas on the 20th. Now the question is how long to make it to Knoxville!!! George
George, do you know how your dealer knows the car is in Amarillo? I just called my dealer and he said that he doesn't have access to data that detailed to know where the car is. He said he only gets updates from Honda on Tuesdays. My VIN is a little lower than yours (6598) so I would think that if yours is in Amarillo, mine is too. I was really hoping to have my car by next week for the weekend of the 4th, which may be possible if the car is already in Texas. Maybe your dealer could try looking up my VIN and seeing if he can find out where it is since he seems to be more familiar with the process of tracking the cars. Thanks.
