Like others have said, 9k can get you a clean title AP1. If I were you I'd wait a few more months and try and save 2k more. Your options from there will widen greatly.

Are AP1's really that bad??
(just a joke people)^^ Agree with this guy, also i wouldnt recommend getting a salvage title unless you plan on keeping this car forever because your resale value is diminished.
I got my first s2000 2 years ago it was a grey 2001 with 58,xxx miles in near mint condition paint 100% stock with a newly replaced oem softop and the guy was asking $11,000 and i got it for $10,800. I considered that a steal at the time but id say if you are patient you will find someone who doesn't realize they could get more for their car and just want fast cash. I was 17 when i got my first s2k(now on my second) i dont know why the one guy said you shouldn't buy this car based off of solely your age what really determines if you should/can is your current income right?
Edit: Forgot to mention the only thing my 01 s2k needed before it was ready for the road was a set of new tires.

A guy in an 90's SUV turned left without looking and hit me head on and totaled my s2000. he was cited at fault and his insurance gave me $14,500 for my car (which was more than i expected i thought i was going to get like 12 or 13 grand.)with that money i bought another 01 ap1 but this time with 23,xxx miles NFR

Just take your time. I had a similar budget of $10K, and looked at a few cars. The very first one I called about, '01, I didn't end up meeting until last as the car was filthy (lived down a dirt road). In the end picked it up for $8300, bone stock, super clean once washed, clean title, has 140K miles. Looked at probably 5 or 6 salvage titles etc. but just not worth the hassle. Just be patient...
Im around the same situation. Ive gotten really close to buying a salvaged title for 9800. had the money and ready to buy but my uncle told me to stay away from salvaged cars.
My budget is also around 9-10k. but i just sold my 91 accord for 1100 so that hopefully should cover the registration fees and stuff.
now have a few more cars lined up b/c of this extra money.
Good luck with finding a car man.
Ballin on a budget.

I really want to know where all these clean title S2000's are for under $10k. I have yet to see a single car that is in that price range that hasn't had theft or some other kind of issue. Looking at Autotrader and ebay there is maybe a handful that have been listed or sold at that price recently but most have little to no details. I know there are cases were someone has gotten a good deal but you really need to be in the right place at the right time or be very very patient and likely both.
Good luck but I think you need to take everyone's advise and save some more money and just buy something cheap and reliable. Focus on getting a good job finishing school or whatever and then buy the car you want.

My '01 was 11k with 81k on it. And it needs a bunch of little things that will add up to a grand when I'm done. Has new top though...
I've wanted one since 05 but I wasn't actively looking until late '11 and pulled the trigger in late '12.
