Default Burning oil

I just got an '02 S2K and I understand that it will burn oil while it is broken in. I was wondering:

- How much oil I should expect it to burn?
- Does this oil burning stop at a certain point?
- What is causing this?

Thanks,
Tom

CONGRATS!...welcome to the club! I hope you enjoy your car as much as we are doing now.

As for your questions

1) It depends on the car and how its broken in...some burn ZERO oil some burn up to a liter every 1000miles
2) Once again, it depends on the car and how its broken in...Some people stop burning oil at 1000miles, some at 10000miles
3) Cause: Engine parts (mostly cylinders&piston rings) breaking in and properly "seating" themselves...

Do a search for more info

Peace

congrat's on your purchase. i hope you love the car even half as much as most of us here do.

your questoins are pretty well answered above. if i may be so bold, i would humbly suggest that you check out the frequently asked questions part of this board. it has lots of great info., especially for new owners that will give you piece of mind, and help you enjoy the ownership of your new baby.

keep the shiny side up.

Thanks for the info. I did not know there was so much variance in the oil burning. I did look at the FAQ's, but I didn't really see a very technical explanation of what is going on. I mean, why don't other cars exhibit oil burning? And why is there so much variance? If oil burning depends on the way the car is broken in, what's the best way to break in an S2K? Just curious.

Best way to break in the S = "drive it like you stole it" (that is after you have over 600 miles on it.
Mine too "burned" or "lost" oil during the first 3,000 miles. It seems like the more i VTEC'd the more oil it "used". After 3,000+ miles, it only uses a small amount between 5,000 miles oil changes. Now have 18,899 miles on the odometer.
I found the BEST way or time to check the oil is first thing in the morning. That way, all of the oil has had time to drain down into the pan over night. Do not add oil if it is only a little low if the car was just shut off. If you do this, it is possible to over-fill the oil.
Enjoy your new toy!

Just get in the habit of checking the oil regularly. My wife's 2000 VW Beetle was down a quart and a half at around 10,000 miles because we didn't bother checking oil consumption. ("Honey, why does the oil light keep going on?")

My 2000 S2000 has used a total of about a quart in 12,000 miles. It takes less than a minute when you're getting gas to make sure the oil level is up where it should be. Just do it.

each car is different- depends at least partially on how it is driven.
mine burned a lot of oil until i changed it at about 4,500 miles or so...
now it never seems to burn much at all-
and it is definitely much quicker...
