Busting the myth...
Was just reading this thread, and was shocked to see that people seem to be under the impression that titanium is harder or stronger than steel. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=147941
Lets qualify the test here first. We're talking about hardened structural alloys of both metals. Pure Ti is soft as poo (10 times softer than steel, and no good for structural).
Ti is used because it is strong and 'lighter than' steel, but it is not AS STRONG, or as hard as steel in any way, shape or form. Furthermore, it is MUCH more expensive to manufacture and manipulate into product.
A bar of titanium the same weight as a bar of steel would be stronger, but ONLY because it would be so much thicker (hence the 'pound for pound' statement in the thread, which is correct). If you take a bar of steel and a bar of titanium the same size (volume and dimension), the bar of steel will be CONSIDERABLY stronger and harder, though heavier. Even the weight difference isn't enormous though, decent grade structural Ti is only about two thirds the density of cro-moly steel.
I'm sure this is not news to some of you, but it obviously is to some others.
