compression test and leak down test wouldn't cost that much. You probably can ask seller to do that for you or make a half and half. If seller isn't lying or anything, i'm sure he will happy to do that.
Edit: Forget about DIY test when it comes to buying a car imo. Do it right at the shop or dealer to get a paper approve.

Anything I should look for in the transmission? how long do clutches normally last and how can I tell if the clutch and or transmission is going?

Tranny is really depend on how previous owner drove it...Best way is open up the tranny. Or i read from somewhere...the guy was saying that when car is parked put it in second? or 6th gear and let the clutch go. If car stalls, clutch is ok if not clutch is gone. Believe or not...lol
