compression test and leak down test wouldn't cost that much. You probably can ask seller to do that for you or make a half and half. If seller isn't lying or anything, i'm sure he will happy to do that.

Edit: Forget about DIY test when it comes to buying a car imo. Do it right at the shop or dealer to get a paper approve.
what is a leak down test? also 3-5k for a new engine isn't that bad considering how good of an engine it is. I also have access to a dyno for free but i am sure I would have to buy from out of state.

And if possible, have a local S2000 guy take a test drive of the car with you.

thanks for the link. I have done compression tests before but they were on small engines. I assume these tests are much more complicated on car engines.

Anything I should look for in the transmission? how long do clutches normally last and how can I tell if the clutch and or transmission is going?

I will have to go out of state when buying a car. Also I am not very close with the people who own them that autox in my state and our season hasn't started yet because of the snow. There really aren't a lot of s2ks in my state. Aside from car events I will maybe see 2 or 3 of them a year in my state.

I meant find a person local to the car you're buying out of state.

Tranny is really depend on how previous owner drove it...Best way is open up the tranny. Or i read from somewhere...the guy was saying that when car is parked put it in second? or 6th gear and let the clutch go. If car stalls, clutch is ok if not clutch is gone. Believe or not...lol

well I can try that with the clutch. I doubt I will be disassembling the transmission though. Hopefully I will get lucky and end up with a good one.

Don't do that. Just put it in 4th at about 60 and floor it. If the clutch slips it's bad.
