I bought my01 out of state, but it was only a 4 hr. drive, (Ohio to IN.). I assume you would like to test drive & inspect the car before buying. If the cost savings on the car can justify the travel expenses, go ahead and fly out to make a deal.
In Ohio, a new title has to be prepared, which involves an inspection by the state patrol or an approved garage. The inspection process was painless here. Sales tax betrween Ca. & Il. may be an issue you need to consider. Good luck, it would be a fun drive home!

I flew to Houston, TX from Orlando to buy mine about a month ago!!

It was a great experience driving it back close to 1,000 miles!!

If this is a new car, you HAVE to get it trucked... I don't think highway cruising is good during break in, and no VTEC...

If it's used, take a few days off and do it!

As far as taxes and stuff, I had to pay the dealer in Houston a .5% VIT?? Tax... Like $60 IIRC, but I did not/could not pay them sales tax... When I brought my car back here, I had to pay close to $1400 in sales tax OUCH!!

Goood Luck!

I bought my 4Runner from a Toyota dealership in VA. I live in CA.

I had to get it trucked over - took ~7 days to move cross country has other pickups and deliveries had to be made along the way.

Just contact a board member near there and have them take at it. Throw them $30.00 or something. I'd have the car shipped back though. I bet the dealer would go 50-50 on it.

See if the dealer will give you a lot of photos in every angle (put a deposit on the car first though). I've read about other board member who've lost out on cars even after they put a deposit on it. They got their money back though- from a Honda dealer no less!!!

I'd rather find a seller closer if something happens. Have you seen the car yet? Have you ridden in it? That's what I'd want to do if I were gonna buy a used car. If you got the time off, consider the costs of flying to CA to look at the car, the costs of your time off and the costs of shipping it. And don't forget the taxes you might have when you bring the car back to your State. In the end, the time won't be worth it, and it might be more expensive than finding something locally. BTW, if you decide to drive the car back, make sure you don't get pulled over by the cops

In California, the car must have at least 7.5K miles on the odometer, or you'll have difficulty registering it as a used car. This is some legislation that the new car dealers got passed to discourage out of state purchase of new cars. I don't know the details ... perhaps someone else has some experience or info.

I purchaed my car out of state Ma, but live in CT. Difference was I bought my car new. Went to the dealership with proof of insurance, bought it with no taxes, slapped my friends dealer plate on it and drove home. A week later I drove my other car to DMV and got my S registered. I had to pay CT taxes at that time. If my S was used I would have to run it through emissions and pay for that. Go to the DMV website and you should be able to get all the legal documentaion you need.
