Didn't read the OP carefully. 5 months is way too short. There's a leak somewhere. Have a professional check on it.

The AC runs off a belt from the crank so the more revs you are turning the faster the compressor spins or at least thats how it used to be. And because it is crank driven it uses power and therefore more gas. Be sure to use a thermometer to see how cold it really is rather than the more subjective "it feels like". If you are in the sun it won't feel as cold, but it will still blow cold. Check to make sure the compressor is coming on too, crank the AC and listen for a clicking under the hood. The clicking is the clutch on the compressor engaging and disengaging, on max air you should only hear it once. If it is cycling, clicking on and off, you are probably low on refrigerant (R134A available at any autostore). If you don't know how to put the R134A in then let a professional do it. It will cost you but you could mess things up otherwise.

As a sidenote, 5 months ago was December, winter air is typically cooler and drier that could be some of what you are feeling. I don't know much about the California climate though. Hope this helps.

is your ac only gets cold when you are moving? mind seems to be warm when am sitting/waiting at a stop light. when the car is moving it gets cold again. anyone else have the same issue?
Mine is exactly opposite of this. Is that normal? Last time I used it I could feel it kick on and then kick off while I was driving. Since it was turned out my face I could definately tell when the AC was on and when the warm humid air from outside was hitting me. Anyone have any ideas for this?

This is probably the best and most comprehensive answer so far. Remember, you bought your car in the fall so this is your first real experience with the AC in higher temps. Also, the AC unit in our cars is small, so as the initial coolant absorbs the hot air from the cabin it doesn't have time to fully expel the heat, and it will be warmer the next time through the cabin.

The net result is cool air, not so cool air, and it feels hot by comparison. Best bet is to vent the car when you start it up on hot days, windows or top down, to get the really hot air out, then start the AC cycle, so it can work more effectively. Also, use the recirc to keep cooling the same air instead of bringing fresh, albeit hot, air into the cabin.

People have reported taking their S in to the dealer and the dealer "topping off" the coolant too - apparently Honda doesn't fill the system completely.

As far as being on the gas goes, when you're on the throttle, the AC condenser disengages so the air starts blowing hot.
