My understanding is that the auto-lock only works if you unlock the car and then dont open the doors. It will re-lock the car after about 30 seconds.

Mostly for accidental bumps in your pocket or something.

Afaik, only American carshave auto lock - unlock with the fob and the car will relock after 30 seconds if a door doesn't open. Also, NA cars disable the passenger auto unlock from the driver's door.

There are two "auto-locks," if I recall correctly. Out of town right now.

1) As mentioned, if you unlock but do not open the doors, the car will autolock

2) You can set the car to either autolock or not after closing the doors. I forget if this is on the car itself, or tied in with the OEM alarm. I set mine to non-autolock, as I do not like cars locking me out. Check the owner's manual.

#1 is a simple re-lock feature in case you inadverdently press unlock but don't open a door. I expect this is included whether you have the default keyless entry or the add-on alarm.

#2 is more likely in the OEM alarm manual, but not the owner's manual. It will lock the doors automatically after some delay when you shut off the car. IIRC, there's a switch on the alarm brain that lets you enable/disable this option. I keep mind disabled too, I don't like the car locking/arming automatically.

I have got out the car, shut the doors and had it auto lock after some time. Got an earful of alarm when I lent in to get something of the passenger seat. In the same way I pulled into a Petrol station with a passenger, got out, fuelled up, went to pay and the car auto locked and my passenger set it off.
Sounds like you have the add-on alarm, not just the basic keyless entry system. Great example why I don't like the auto-arming alarm.

Any info on turning off the auto-arming bit would be great.

I do not mind the car locking itself, but arming too is a pain.
