I have a friend who also has a 2001 s, stock, who's CEL light comes on every now and then - months apart. He merely resets it with the backup fuse, and goes on his way.

I suggested he get the codes pulled for the cause. He thinks it might be bad gas, or a bad gas cap. Possibly a bad sensor in the exhaust line.

If there was a serious problem, wouldn't the CEL light come on quickly, not a month after resetting?!

IMO, he shouldn't reset it anymore and have it looked at or at least find out what the code is for. It sounds like something emissions related (bad O2 sensor?) to me that could still be covered under warranty - I think the emissions system has a longer warranty period than the regular 36/3 warranty but I could be wrong?

You could also try a fuel system cleaner like Chevron Techron and try swapping the gas cap with another S2k (yours?) to rule these out. I'd still get the code first.
