coilover worth it?
i dunno what road conditions are like in your area, but coilovers are acceptable here down south. im on tein flex coilovers and it's slightly stiffer than stock. it handles great too.
i was just at the track few weeks ago and noticed slight more over steer, but once you figure out where the breaking point is...you'll be find.
also, if you want coilovers...you might want to look at a full set up with shocks and upper mount.

So let me get this straight -- you are budgeting $1k for your spring/shock combo, or for your entire suspension setup? If I were you I would figure out which auto-x class you want to run in, and then figure out which suspension mods you are allowed to have in that class. The S2K is a suberbly-handling car from the factory, so you can run with the head of the pack in stock or some of the lower classes and keep your stock shocks/springs. Depending on the class (and sanctioning body) you may be allowed to change swaybars, bracing, or even tire size whereas if you change your shocks and/or springs you get bumped up into a much more competitive class.
My advice would be to stick with SCCA Solo Stock Class -- that will let you change the shocks/springs however you would like (incl. a set of coilovers), and change the front (but not rear) sway bar, but since the only real performance mods you can do are to change the air filter and the cat-back portion of the exhaust you have to learn how to drive fast, not let the car drive fast for you.
