Default Cold Weather High RPM Problems

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to first congratulate everyone on owning one of the most affordable and performance worthy vehicles in the world. I don't know how Honda crammed so much joy into a single driving machine. I'm still trying to get used to all the stares, thumbs ups, and respect nods I keep getting - this car makes everyone who owns it instantly cool.

Anyway, I am having a problem in cold weather. My car just got past it's burn in period (I have 690 miles on it). In the cold weather (below freezing), during rapid acceleration approaching 7500 RPMs on the tach the engine thuds and pulls back very abruptly. This has happened to me twice and therefore raises my concern. I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this type of symptom when driving the car in cold weather and if so have I done any damage to the car in these two incidences? I will not be going over 7K RPMs until the car is fully warmed up for now on, but it would be comforting to know that my S2K is not the only one in the world that behaves this way.

BTW. Great site, I used it extensively before purchasing my new S2K and found it a great help in making my ultimate purchasing decision.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

sorry, no experience of cold weather, can't help you.

just want to say Congratulation!!! and welcome to the site, hope you enjoy here.

so you got a Blue S2000 right?? Great Colour!!

small tips for your problem from me (I am probably wrong.), when the temperature meter reach 3 bar doesn't mean the temperature of the oil is in it's normal driving temperature. I heard the others said the rpm limiter not only kick in at redline but also sometimes at 6000rpm or 7500rpm when the temperature of oil is not up to normal yet....it seens like to me that that your problem is the rev limiter kick in at 7500rpm....I probably wrong about this....since that never happen to me....there may be other problem.

Congrats on the car!

Yeah....not a a pleasant feeling hitting that limiter unexpectedly. I did it the other day not paying attention. You have to let the car warm up to 3 temp bars before going into Vtec range(past 6-7000 rpm's).

make sure you dont go over 6k rpm before you reach atleast 3 bars on the temp gauge. VTEC doesnt work very well before you warm up your car

You're definitely hitting the rev limiter. I hit it a few times before I knew about warming up the car. The rev limiter kicks in at around 7500 rpms.

Thanks for replying.

It makes me feel better that it's probably the limiter kicking in and not the engine breaking apart that causes the thud. In either case I now wait for the 3 amber bars on the temp gauge to illuminate before confidently entering VTEC land.

Best Regards,
Adam

Most of the hondas I've owned get a real strange sound around 3000 RPM in cold weather. Sounds like the valves are ready to break free. I just shift early until things warm up.

3 bars indicates water temp. Sounds like you are trying to vtec before you have oil temp in the normal operating range. Word out is vtec is inhibited if oil temp is too low. I suggest you wait 3 bars plus 10 to 15 minutes during Jersey winters.
