I would assume that it would have to be due to the fact that there are umpteen million Miatas out thereand inital production was increased dramatically to meet demand which probably let a few stinkers out there. Factor in the fact that you have to run the Bejesus out of them to get any power since the early ones had about 116 hp as well as that they have been around almost 14 years. My brother has one of the first ones here in Georgia and he has gone through 4 clutches, 3 tops and 2 engines, but he also has 240,000 miles on it. I agree the car has been very reliable.

That first Road and Track figure was a typo. R&T listed the NSX figures both cars instead of NSX for NSX and S2K for S2K.
