Ever since I sold my 1998 Type R I've been searching for that same unique rawness off the showroom floor. Since then I've owned a plethora of cars, inlcuding an '04 and '06 STI, and an '06 Evo IX RS. I very recently acquired an '08 CR.

I can honestly rate them accordingly:

Fun factor: CR>'98TypeR>'04STi>'06EvoIXRS>'06STI

Coolness factor:
CR='98TypeR>'06EvoIXRS>'04STi>'06STI

Daily Driver:
'06STI>'04STi>'06EvoIXRS>'98TypeR>CR

...so based on the above...
Value(ROI):
'98TypeR=CR>'04STi>'06EvoIXRS>'06STI
It's really funny you mention the type-r.

I have a '98 type-r and an '01 S2000. Both are in great condition and the only major thing needed to keep them fun-as-new is to change out the struts/shocks/springs/bushings at about 90k each.

The type-r is by far the best vehicle and most fun car I've ever owned. Last year I went to find a "raw" car like it. My thought was that with over 100k miles it might be time to sell high and move into something newer.

But I just couldn't find an all-season car to compete with it. The subies were fun, but still not quite what I wanted.

The s2k is just a different animal. I love it, but it's different from the type-r.

The type-r just feels more "stout" to me - much stronger synchros, clutch, etc... - I guess I'd say track-ready. Maybe not just track-ready but race-ready. It is forgiving enough that once you "feel" it out, you KNOW what it will do in every corner.

But I have to disagree with you on your daily driver rating - I think the 98 type-r is just about perfect.

As far as I'm concerned the problem with the CR is not how easy or difficult it is to take the HT off, it's the fact that you cannot drive the car as a convertible because should you be hours away from home and it starts to rain, well, in simple terms, you are screwed...
not with my CR. already this year i have taken the top off 4x, being 3~4 hours away from home. i just bring it with me.....

IMHO the CR is not worth it. You can take a base S and add swaybars, wider tires, R&P stiffners and aero package (not the CR ricer package) and you dailing pretty close to the CR numbers.

Some may think im crazy but wow does the CR feel so much different than my 06. I drive them back to back some days and the CR feels almost like a totaly different car. The sterring is stiffer, takes more force to turn the wheel, but not bad. The CR seems a lot more stable on the expressway and at high speeds. The car just feels so much more solid, almost like Honda took extra care in building the car lol.

Still love my 06 as well!

I personally hate the 215/255 RE070s. I had the luxury of comparing my CR to my recent '05 S2000 for almost 2 months before we got rid of the '05. I had fresh 225/255 RE01-Rs on the '05, a big swaybar and custom valved Koni Yellows. The difference was still very noticeable. The stock CR was still a much more solid and capable vehicle in comparison. The tires couldn't hold a light against the RE01-Rs. I did get to auto-x the two a the same event with the same tires (Hoosier A6s). Again, the CR was much more stable and planted through the technical elements of the course allowing me to keep my foot in it. I was about .5 second faster in the CR. I'm sure the '05 could have bee tuned to be as fast or faster, but you would have had to put forth a lot of effort in tuning/developing the setup. The CR was fresh out of the box at that point.

For the street, I'm ditching the RE070s in favor of some 225/245 RE-11s

lol,

just stockies! I just wanted to point out that there are some people (like myself) who don't find the RE070s to be very impressive. I will admit that they are slightly better than the RE050s, but not by much IMO. I always liked the feel of the S02s on the AP1. That tire worked well with the stock setup!
