Don't feel bad, I crunched the 1-2 shift on the way to work this morning. Not too bad, but I definitely heard it (top down). Haven't done that in forever. I feel like a goofy 16 year old again--and I've been driving manuals exclusively for 10+ years.

There is almost nothing more aggrevating.

A good friend runs his late 80's 911 at Road America in Wisc and we always compare notes. "Missed shift" is #1 catastophic failure there when the Porsche club runs. 1st must not be protected on Stuttgart's trannie's like in newer Honda's. He says i'ts like a shadow over the course for some reason.

Another name for it is the "blocker ring". Have you ever tried to shift into 1st when your road speed was too fast? The tranny won't let you easily do it. To find out at what speed your car will allow you to downshift into 1st cold and hot, try this. Next time you are driving at about 30-35 mph (probably in 3rd), push your clutch in and KEEP IT THERE (to avoid any mishaps). Make sure the road is clear front and back of you. NOW, move your shifter into the 1st gear gate and apply steady, firm pressure. As your road speed decreases, you will be able to go into 1st with the existing pressure on the stick. Don't re-engage your clutch till you are nearly stopped (just in case) and are ready to go again. It is above this speed that the blocker ring will prevent you from mis-shifting into 1st. HOWEVER, this can be defeated by double clutch rev matching. Don't do this unless you understand your road speed vs engine speed vs gear selection REALLY WELL!

(Oops! edited my speed.)
