I have not driven my S2000 for about 9 weeks.
The battery went flat and now will not hold any charge. A replacement is now necessary.

Is this to be expected?

No, it should be able to charge on a trickle charge for a long period of time. If not I would say warranty.

 

I think the battery should be able to do a bit better than that.

I once had a Honda whose battery crapped out overnight due to an internal short. When I parked the car it was fine, and when I tried to start it the next morning it was totally dead and unchargeable. It was replaced under warranty. Yours may have done the same thing. If you haven't confused the dealer with the 9 weeks part, which may be irrelevant after all, you have a case.

The lead plates in the batteries will crack and break as they age, especially in a car with a stiff suspension (there is more vibration)

As this debris settles in the bottom of the battery case, the indivudual plates will start to short out (the internal short mentioned above)

IMO batteries are like shock absorbers, life expectancy is somewhat "up in the air"

 

My NSX was in the bodyshop for replacing new front bumper and new bodykit for almost 2 months and when I got my car back it was fine.
However, I went to Acura to replace my wiper blade the next day and when I was ready to leave, my car couldn't start! I was lucky enough that I was at the dealer and they found out my battery was dead and needed a new one.

Mine is in the Dealers now being undressed.
Saving a fortune using the good ladies car, 36 mpg and plain unleaded.

How come all I see on the road now is Boxsters and Z3's, where were they when the S2000 was in one piece?

 

Good news - I have had my battery replaced by the dealer unedr warranty and I am now back driving my beautiful S2000.

I neglected to mention the 9 weeks of idle and they never asked so I got a result without confusing the issue.
