Here are some pics from my work on the project....

These pics are from a couple of months ago, but stocky definitely has the edge on me in getting this finished. My work on this has taken a back seat to my audio control mod.

Unless stocky knows something I don't, it will be hard to make the turn signal and idiot lights the same color blue. If you look at the first picture above and compare it to the second and third pictures, you will notice that the idiot lights and turn signal arrows come from the black plastic areas, not from the shelled out white area. If you want this stuff blue too, you will need to open up the black plastic area, and possible change a color filter in there. the Electroluminescent solution that stocky has doesn't apply to the black area. Is this correct, stocky?

Hey cube,

thanks for working on that too but actually it is no my intention to make the turn signals nor the "idiot" lights blue...these will remain stock!

stocky/DJ,

There are several places that will do custom EL panels for MUCH cheaper than $3k...found one in UK, that will do setup for a custom cut panel (glows in your choice of colors) for 300 pounds. Although I still consider this WAY too expensive...

Also, don't make the tach from 3 separate pieces...you should be able to get large-size EL panels (like the size of a small sheet of paper) from surplus stores for $5-$15/piece. You can cut these down to whatever size/shape you want, as they normally have multiple connectors surrounding the entire sheet. If you get the white glowing kind, you can choose multiple colors for the entire panel by using the original filter idea, and still get the brightness needed.

Hey MacGyver,

I know that but first you don't get large sizes for cheap (have you seen any surplus store which gives you an A3 foil for 15 USD?!)

Second thing is if you cut the whole thing into shape you have way too much "open ends" if you get what I mean.

But thanks for investigating...I am happy for any comments...

I would be glad if it were taht way...if you find any store who gives the EL-foil in the needed size for that price please post contact information...

Best Greetings,

Yves

Right! I'm on the same page here -- only the RPMs, Speedo, Odo, temp, fuel, (& I'd reckon the "mph/kph") in the wundabar Blue Rest 'o the dash retaining its OEM lighting.

...and yup, stocky,...I'm still out here patiently waitin'! Keep up the effort man, I can't wait for the results of your labors. Thanks much!!!

Question: For those of you removing the instrument panel and gauges without pulling the steering wheel, what are you pulling?

Steering column covers? Turn signal and wiper levers?

Thanks beforehand!

To Be Honest:

Blue is nice, but what I'd really like to see, as a former Lexus LS400 owner, is converting our dash to a lexus-like electroluminescent WHITE light. For all those that have seen the now-famous Lexus dashboard instrument lighting, you know what I'm talking about. That would be visible, look amazing, and look even better than the blue. I remain anxious to see what you guys think about that one, and whether or not anyone figures out how to do that one...
