rw, I don't recall any pre-payment for uninstalling the switch. It's true that you're required by the NHTSA to remove the switch when you sell the vehicle (at your own cost)...

Good luck.

I don't think it's the NHTSA that requires the uninstall of the switch when the car is sold. I don't remember signing anything that stated that. There is nothing on the NHTSA form concerning removal of the switch.

Are you sure it's not just Honda requiring that to avoid liability issues ?

You guys might be right. I really thought it was NHTSA, but it might indeed be AHM.

Jim, that'd be great if they refunded money when the switch is eventually removed. I'll believe that when I see it.

I can't believe people are paying hundreds of dollars for this modification. All it is is a keyed electrical switch thrown on the power line for the passenger SRS. I had the passenger SRS out of my Eclipse at least twice while doing electrical mod's that could potentially set if off.

The most expensive piece of this mod would be the purchase of the switch itself. Of course, you would have to be willing to do some electrical work, which many people are not comfortable doing themselves.

You need to consider these facts:

1. You need special permission from the guv'mint (nanny state, etc.) to do this in our cars.
2. It isn't as simple as adding a switch, you need to avoid problems with the SRS system. Which leads to...
3. The official Honda route preserves the warranty on the SRS system.
4. Simply adding a switch or cutting a wire will cause the SRS fault-light to come on, or the airbags could malfuntion either when they are needed or not needed.
5. Aftermarket switch installations (the proper ones) have been reported as problematic.

BUMP.................. update...........

I just Called Honda in Torrance....

Honda Dealers are NO longer doing and SRS passanger disablement

the seat has a 60lb sensor and will not go off if you have a small dog or bag of food
2005 per Honda on 3-24-05
and asked if they will add a disable, like so many other cars and truck. any child and seat
will be heavier than 60lb sensor...
"No plans just the sensor in the seat"

Honda Said to contact:

http://www.nhtsa.com

and get the paperwork...and then find a installer....
Honda dealer will not do the install

Well, well.... That really sucks!

I'm a little confused. I'm 99% sure that my car does *not* have a weight sensor in the seat. I suspect this is either a new development in recent S2000 models, or their information is wrong. Are you sure about this, picturepro?

Yes, you have to contact NHTSA to get the ball rolling.

i'm 100% sure my car has no sensor. and this would have to be a development w/ new S2000's, as i've seen under the seat for even up to 2003's.

did this information come from a dealer or from AHM?

i wouldn't trust the dealer for sure...

i've got to pass by my dealer to pick up some touch up paint for my wife's Ody... i'll get under a 2005's passenger seat and see if there's any wire there, as there is NO wire in my 2001.

look under the passenger seat of a 2005 -- IF there is a sensor there, then there will be a YELLOW wrapped wire bundle coming up into the seat.

was at the dealer -- i dug under the passenger seat of both a 2004 (used) and a new 2005 S2000.

no wire bundle. no wires at all. therefore no airbag sensor.

done.

(on the other hand, my 2002 Ody does have some sort of airbag related wiring (sensor?) in the passenger seat.)

At least someone talked to somebody at Honda. I've been calling for weeks, leaving voicemail, no response.

My MY2000 S2000 does not have any sensor either. Honda of SF did the install - not sure if they still will, as it was done a couple years ago now. I think I was the first one in here to get through the whole process and if you skip back, I had the whole thing documented. Honda will pay to remove the switch, except for $100, when you sell the car. I believe it is a Honda requirement, but it probably protects you too, as the NHTSA permission form is in the owner's name who had it installed, not the owner's name of who buys the car after installation. I suspect it needs to be removed and the new owner has to get NHTSA permission.
