Went to my local car audio shop, they disconnected the wire taped them up, 10 minutes and $25 later I was cruising down the road. The SRS light stays on but its ok.

Boy, that was most definitely not OK--a TERRIBLE idea! Without a legally authorized and properly installed switch, you now have NO way to enable the airbag for adults and older children who may ride with you. If such a passenger should ever be injured while riding in your vehicle during an accident, and even if your conscience can remain clear about your actions worsening these injuries, you and that audio shop are exposing yourselves to huge potential legal liability. Also, when you next take your car to the dealership for service, they will most definitely have something to say about it and will likely force you to reconnect it. You probably wasted your time and $25.

wow. dude.... this just doesn't seem to be a good idea to me... while the implications regarding liability are staggering, the constant on idiot light prevents the car from letting you know if there are other legitimate issues w/ the remaining airbag.

i hope you never have to put this decision to the test.

Only did it as a temporary fix while we put my wifes Yukon in the shop. Planned on having it reconnected when it comes back out. Considering the time frame that I had it was the only option so that I could take my baby to daycare.

thanks for the update. so, it sounds like it's following the path that my dealer outlined... i'm guessing this is probably going to become 'the thread' on how to get this done...

i wonder what the video is... i hope it isn't one of those vids they showed back in driver's education... "Blood on the Highway" or whatever... that would be a bit disturbing...

Hi all, sorry if these are dumb questions, but even after going through this thread it's not entirely clear to me:

1) Are the aftermarket/NHTSA "switches" really switches, i.e. do they allow you to turn the air bag on and off whenever you want?
1a) Presumably these solutions don't activate the SRS light, correct?
2) Assuming you don't care about the SRS light and the few extra minutes each time, couldn't you accomplish the same thing (turning it on/off at will) by plugging/unplugging it?
3) What's this about "locking" the seat belt? They use pressure-sensitive pretensioners, right? Is there a way to lock them and unlock them for the duration of a trip?

Thanks,
John
