I feel the same way. Maybe it seems that way since the back of our cars are so short....

Some people may laugh, but I've actually gotten out of my car while my friend stopped behind me. His car looked like it was right up my car's butt, but then it looked normal when I got off the car and took a look at it.

I have less problem with people tailgating me. I assumed it was because my head was about even with their bumpers, so people can visualize what they would hit if they cannot stop in time. Are people more polite to women drivers?

I think other cars just "appear" to be closer since we are sitting so far back in the car. Another aspect of the visual trickery is that our hood is so long so we feel like we are really far back from the car in front as well. Makes it seem like the person behind is a lot closer than they should be by comparison.

I don't think it's paranoia. There are quite a few cars that tailgate the S. Some are trying to figure out what the make is and others want to out-race you. I've driven for more than 42 years and driving the S is a different experience. I't's just not because we sit low - vettes actually sit a a bit lower. I don't know really know why they do this.
BTW, I usually do move over when tailgated, but when they get too strange I VTEC and I'm gone. Then they look a little strange. Again, it's a very different experience with an S. I've seen Z3/4's driving slow and looking tired in traffic and the highway but they and the Miatas don't seem to be run over. Maybe people know the cars are just cute.
cruise with attitude but look in the rear view a lot
