Some advise for those that feel they get tailgated alot...try moving over.
It's not about moving over. People follow me closely when I'm on a 1-lane road, and there ain't nowhere to go. They can clearly see the car in front of me, and yet they insist on following closely.

I think it's a combination of two things, both already mentioned in this thread:

1. We are sitting far back in the car, so the lessened space between your back and the rear bumper makes it all the more obvious when someone ELSE'S bumper is right behind you...

2. With the top always down, it's very easy to see through the S2000, making people feel as if they can follow closely "safely" .

BTW, I agree with your post. If you're being tailgated and you can go faster OR move over, please do one of the two when you feel comfortable.

in my experience with driving in traffic, it seems that nice/newer cars, typically luxary or sports cars leave a lot of space....
everyday beaters, suv, and pickup trucks like to ride the bumper...

in regards to just moving over.... i do when i start feeling uneasy about it....
but honestly....in traffic, no one is getting anywhere faster

defensive driving ftw haha

I've put in a lot of time in a BMW Z4, and never noticed the tailgating with that. And the driver in the Z4 sits way back too.

Solution/Retribution for tailgaters.

Step 1: Replace cat with test pipe
Step 2: Set fuel management with an option to run slightly rich at WOT
Step 3: Let an ass hole park on your bumper at a light
Step 4: Let the people in front of you get some good distance
Step 5: Dump the clutch and give it WOT

They will not stop so close next due to fear of the smell.

I feel the same way. Maybe it seems that way since the back of our cars are so short....

My first week with the S included this type of paranoia. I hadn't driven a clutch in years, and every stoplight with a hill would worry me espcially cause it looked like the car behind me was getting within inches of my bumper. I'd usually let the car roll back just a little before they stopped to try to get them to stop early. It's just paranoia.

In trafic, no one is ever behind me long. With the top down, this is the best "lane-hopping" car around. It's so agile.

I think other cars just "appear" to be closer since we are sitting so far back in the car. Another aspect of the visual trickery is that our hood is so long so we feel like we are really far back from the car in front as well. Makes it seem like the person behind is a lot closer than they should be by comparison.
