When skipping gears just double clutch and rev match(both going up or down) I have over 2 million miles in a truck without any synchros(I don't even use the clutch once I get truck moving and it has 10 gears). The transmission doesn't care what gear you try to put it in as long as you don't make the synchros work to hard, that's why you rev match to the "gear" you want to put it in.

As long as you are correctly rev-matching when you downshift, it shouldn't matter if you skip an extra gear or not. I don't ever skip gears when upshifting though.

That doesn't really do much to be honest. Engine RPM is only half the issue, road speed plays a huge role in why syncros go bad.

This is why I usually shift through all gears with the clutch disengaged as I come to a stop or quick slow down. Hopefully that's a good thing, or at least not harmful. I used to shift into 1st with the clutch disengaged while slightly coasting, but I guess without synchro that is really bad.

The few times I did skip gears was when hitting a cruise condition just after accelerating, such as when coming up over a crest of a hill, it seemed harmless but I don't do it any more regardless.

I never downshift in the order of the gears though (6,5,4,3,2,1 etc..), I will downshift to any gear I want as I feel necessary, I don't believe there is anything to worry about with this.

You don't need to cycle through the gears as you're slowing down with the clutch disengaged, there really isn't a need for it. Syncros wear out on upshifts because the gear needs to match the speed of the shaft before it can engage. So if you're going from 2nd to 5th, that syncro needs to work pretty hard to match the speeds. It's the same story if you're coasting at ~5mph and try to stick it into 1st. With some trannys it goes in no problem, but on others you can actually hear a whirling sound which is the syncro trying to match the shaft speed.

Not everybody has the same experience and skill that you do. Road speed makes a difference too, just as some said.

Wouldnt it just go straight into the 1st gear at 5 mph? That is about 1000 rpm in first I thought
