Default Does anyone's '02 rear window rattle?

Hey guys,

My '02 rear window has a slight rattle at highway speeds. It starts around 55-60 MPH. As best as I can discern, it's because of the window vibrating in the wind - I believe this because the sound stops when I push up and out on the rear window with my hand. The rattle is relatively soft, and is not audible above the radio...I can only really hear it well when the radio is off, the top is up, and I'm cruising in 6th gear.

I went on a test drive with a Honda technician yesterday, and he said he didn't hear anything unusual for a S2000. So, I'm curious, do any of you notice a similar rattle from your '02 rear window? Or is this something that just happens with convertibles? The S2000 is my first convertible, so I don't know if this is just something that comes with the territory. To be quite honest, I'm not 100% certain whether the noise was there in the past or not. I definitely may have tuned into it more recently. Still, I'm not fully convinced that it's normal, and would like to know if you guys have similar sounds. Most of the times, either my top is down or the radio is up, so it's not a major issue, but it's still a bit irritating for those times when I have the top up and radio off.

Also, I remember reading a thread recently about a rattle coming from the top, and the solution was to lube a piece of the convertible mechanism. I can't find that thread now - can someone point me to it? It was pretty recent and in the S2000 Talk forum.

Thanks a lot...

Not sure if this will help any, but my '95 Mustang GT Convertible had the same rattle from the window at higher speeds, the sound remained even after the top was replaced in '02.

Since this sound only occurs when the top is up, I wouldn't be able to help out.

I've never had the top up for more than a few minutes at a time, and never noticed anything.

I will say that it sounds logical, the window is attached to a piece of cloth, not secured to the body.

I have a 2002 too and the top rattles, even at lower speeds. To quell the noise, I took at small cotton shop towel, rolled it up and put it in the sort of pocket running vertically just to the right of the window. That additional tension helped a lot.

Thanks Kenny_Stang, Heyitsgary, marclw. So maybe the rattle isn't abnormal after all, and I'm just new to convertibles.

marclw, out of curiosity, was the rattle in your top similar to what I described - coming from the rear window and only slightly audible? It does sound like the same issue, since adding tension helped (your towel and my pushing on the window).

Anyone else with input, please keep 'em coming! Thanks again to everyone.

this is also my first convertible car and i've came to learn that there are always some "noises" when you have a soft top. its just a part of the experience and it can never be 100% quiet. i used to paranoid about noises when i first got the car, but after several test drives of other s2k's at my job, they all make the same noises even with 5 miles on the odometer.
