Driving a NEW S2000 on the highway?!?
if u must do freeway.. it's a good opportunity to piss ppl off... varying your speed is good.. as ppl approach you from behind.. slow down so as to begin to vary your speed.. as they attempt to pass you.. speed up again to encourage good engine break-in.
You can go 90 mph in 6th @ 5500 RPM--keeping within the break-in limits. If you vary your speed, mix the gears, you'll be doing fine for the break-in. I think you can live quite easily within the envelope on the highway between 55 and 90. Until you get used to the high-revving engine, it's quite easy to keep shifts below VTEC--it sounds like you need to shift at about 5K. But, once you get used to spinning up to 9K, don't ever go back to something that red-lines at 6!
I've actually had fun speeding up & slowing down on the fwy - funny to see how many people drive sooo fast while I'm cruising along slowly... and grinning the whole time! I kept it between 3 & 4.5 k most of the time, & at 600 miles am now just taking it up to 5 - 5.5k while still varying speeds; planning on taking the ultra-conservative approach to break-in, but once you start hitting 5k, that magic 6k mark starts begging to be reached!

300- freeway cruising, music listening, loving-every-mile-of-it - miles per tank.
Amazing, huh? The mpg is right up there with my wife's Accord. (And a lot more fun! )
An employer, gas station owner/mechanic, once told me that driving a steady speed (RPM) is the worst thing, causing ridges in the cylinder walls. He said you should vary speed, but also use the entire RPM range. Staying under 5500 until 600 miles is the rule, and keeping the VTECs and 9K bursts to a minimum initially may be helpful for everything to get seated, but I'd think you shouldn't be afraid to use the full RPM range. Personally, I've only been up to 8500, but keeping it under VTEC after 600 miles shouldn't be necessary, and might be counter productive.
