Drove a 00 Vette... the S is better
i think that they are very different cars...
i have driven the convertible vette and still think that-
the vette has the classic "throaty" sound from the rear, while ours is more of a formula one sound.
the vette has more torque, and i like the gauges in the windshield (might have been an option)- you can keep your eyes on the road and still see the tach and speedo.
i would take our car anytime over the vette for handling- i also like the balance of our car better...

Gotta chime in here. I just bought my s2k (take delivery tomorrow) after testing a bunch of sports cars. This included a used BMW Z3 2.8, used M Roadster, new Miata and used Corvettes (C5s). I won't go into detail on all of these, but I will say the Vette feels and is much bigger and heavier. It stuck like glue in the turns with very little roll but the ride was harsher. The power was great but even though it has a decent red line, it felt like I was pushing the engine over 5,000 rpm. The shifter is stiffer and balky compared to the s2k's and the interior feels cheaper. While the car is very solid, it didn't have that "all of a piece" feel I got from the S2k. It reminded me of my 1995 Z28 in a lot of ways. The Vette was a 99 coupe with 22000 miles. Even used convertibles cost 7 or 8 thousand more than the new s2k.
Another 2 cents: I owned a standard C5 for two years before trading it in on my S this year. The Vette was a 6 speed coupe. It seemed to me to be a great high speed criuser (made 900 miles in one day at great comfort). I had no quarrel with the cockpit, either in quality or comfort. What I didn't like? It's a very large car in feeling, and hard to toss and park. It'll corner, but you still feel as tho you're moving some large sedan w/o body roll. The shifter stinks--long throws and vague, as the tranny is in the rear with remote linkage. The Chevy V8 always sounded as tho it was lo-tech and about to self-destruct (which mine did at 1600mi.). I was also disappointed with the exhaust sound; even tho there was a complete dual system, it sounded like a single pipe Buick. Mustangs sound much better, IMHO. I'm much more satisfied with the S. It's completely all-of-a-piece sports car. The one thing I'd steal off the Vette, tho, is it's top-storage arrangement--everything stows under a hard body color panel. It's probably the best of all convertibles.
no car is perfect, the s2000 is not for everybody, neither is the vette. it all depends on what your looking for. i love the c5 vette, as i love chevy's, it's my favorite car maker and what i grew up with. (my first car was a chevy and i still drive it and love it) but haven driven a vette before i can say the s2k has much better interior materials, fit and finish, it doesn't flex and squeak as much, much more nimble, has a better seating position and is there a car south of 50k with a better shifter? The vette has tire roasting torque, that unmistakeable v-8 thrust and exhaust note not to mention 50 years of heritage behind it. i beleive it truly is america's sports car.
I LOVE my 2003 Z06. It really doesn't feel as "tossable" as my S2000 but man the torque is killer!!!!! Both cars are very nice to drive but the Z06 does handle differently - not better or worse - just not the same. I get a LOT more attention from other folks in the Z06. The other day, a UPS driver actually turned around and followed me into a gas station to talk about the Z.
Magazine racers compare #'s. Knowledgable drivers compare feel. If the owner of any car "feels" that his current ride is a better handling car, in his hands, it probably would be. To discredit possibilities because they are based on a driver's lack of intimacy with a newbie car is wrong. Perhaps with time one might get as comfortable with the larger, heavier, albeit more powerful Vette, but I think in most cases, S2000 owners could outpace a C5 on most road courses emphasizing handling and not speed. Give them all six months behind the wheel of the Vette and I'm sure the results would be reversed. My 385-hp Camaro SS (sold for my S2K) with a very tight BMR handling package is (was-?) every bit the handler my S2000 is, but getting to that comfortable point of pushing the vehicle confidently took time and a few extra $$. The F-bods may appear too long and weigh too much (compared to the S2000) but in the right hands, they are charging rhinos, and that INCLUDES, an atypical C5.
I have ridden in and driven extensively a 00 C5 due to a good friend having one. I wouldn't say the S2K is better... more like different!
We both loved swapping cars and would be grinning ear to ear when we handed the keys back.
The grass is always greener...
The Z06 is to a C5 as an NSX is to an S2000.
IMHO
