Speaking of gearing, can anyone help me understand the logic of the gearing on the '04? It's shorter gearing, right? Meaning that the shift points come sooner?

I guess they did this so that you stay in (or near) VTEC when you shift? (with the original gearing and an 8K redline, you'd be out of VTEC when shifting).

But if VTEC weren't a factor, I think you'd actually want the opposite to produce similar results as the '03. As you add torque to the engine and reduce the redline, you want to have taller gearing so that the shift points remain at reasonable speeds.
Indeed, Honda both lowered the redline and shortened the gearing, so that the shifts come even soon than either of those changes alone.

I can explain the two seperately... The gearing was changed to give the car extra acceleration - the same principle that lets you accelerate quicker in 5th than 6th. The redline was changed to prolong the engin's life, now that it has a longer stroke.

I can't explain why they did both, though. The gearing and engine changes, I mean. If the engine gives enough extra torque, why do the gearing change? If the gearing is enough, why bother with the engine? I don't get it.

The changes have nothing to do with VTEC or its engagement point. In fact, in this context, the redline change is a definite step backwards. The 1st to 2nd shift, for example, drops you out of VTEC. Try shifting your MY00 at 8000rpm and see where you end up.

Indeed, with the additional torque and hp we supposedly have with the new engine, the car should have been able to properly support and even higher gearing.

confusing but interesting

All i Know is I look at the magazines and track times slips from other drivers for 00 models and I see 13.8s, 13.9 14.0 etc and 0-60 in the low 5s and mid 5s. Then the 04 is about the same and sometimes even slower but I would think it should have been faster with more power?

Hmmmm....depends.....from 1-2 shift I'm almost always north of 6500 when second engages. I don't powershift per say but I am coming on the gas as I'm releasing the clutch......

I dynod at 210 in 100 degree temps in the shop....when 00-03 models were putting down 180-195.

There's a danger in relying too much on published statistics...remember Honda claim the 04 to have 240bhp....and the same 0-60 time....well its been proven on the board that the the bhp statement is wrong.

If you have actually driven an 04 you will feel the difference in the torque levels. FYI, although the engine is in the red at 8000rpm, its not hitting the rev limiter until around 8400-8500. For all you 04 owners - try it - it still pulls at 7800 through and past 8000.....

....and i dont drop out of vtec when I shift 1-2

I would say the 04 is comparable to an 00-03 with gears....they have about the same acceleration - I know, Ive run alongside a 'geared' car.

All I can suggest is go find an 04 to run against and see what happens
