It depends.... some people might have sensitive ears... plus prolong exposure to high noise level will affect your hearing as you get older.
But, I personally wouldn't use ear plugs...I'll drive it with the top down until it start to rain and pull over and put the top up. I have driven to Toronto Canada from Boston Massachusetts...80%of the time the top was down.
(That's able 600 mile one way)

I have never felt the need to wear ear plugs: it's all part of the S2000 experience. If I had been wearing ear plugs would I have noticed the seriously sounding metallic grinding sound when I reversed my S2000 today?
My wife used to use cotton wool in her ears to reduce the effect of the wind (she suffered serious ear infection when she was young). Now, it is very rarely that she feels it necessary so I guess she would probably say no.

Wow the last thing I would worry about is dammaging your ears from just the car or wind noise.
My Alpine amp and MB Quart speakers are loud enough to bypass the eardrum alltogether, go directly to the part of the brain which processes sound, and destroy that. Now that's loud!
