Default Engine loses power @ 7K rpm % 1st,2nd gear

I have a '03 S2K. My S2K's engine loses power suddenly when I bring it up to 7,000 rpm at 1st & 2nd gears. It doesn't always happen but almost always when I start driving it after not driving it for a while (few hrs). This doesn't happen once I am at the 3rd gear. Is this sudden power lose normal? Is it wrong to bring it up to such high rpms when you just start to drive the car?

i'm not sure if this is your problem, but the engine needs to be adequately warmed up before you should rev it to such high rpm. the general consensus of the people on this board is to run the car for 10 minutes after the temp guage shows 3 bars before any high rpm driving.

btw, i notice that you are new here. how long have you had your 03 s2000?? remember you need to properly breakin the engine by not revving past 6000rpm for the first 600 miles. also, it is suggested you avoid excessive constant speed driving during the breakin period as well as avoid any hard acceleration.

arghhh not one of these threads...

dude, please take it easy on the engine. warm it up and make sure you have 3 bars on the temp gauge before going into the higher rpm range. #1 reason for engine damage: failure to warm up engine before hard driving

Thanks to both of you. So you need to make sure the engine is warm enough (at least 3 bars in temp gauge)... I am not sure if I can follow the 10 min rule b/c most of my driving is within 20 min distance.
btw, do you guys also wait for the engine to warm up b4 starting to drive? I start to driving my S2K, seconds after pressing the engine button.

VTEC_Junkie, I've had mine since last year Dec 31. I've known this site but ROMed till now. I have about 2,800 miles. I did do my break-in for the 1st 1,000 km kept it around 3-4,000 rpm.

i wait till the car has atleast 2 bars on the temp gauge and then i start driving. with the hot weather, it doesnt take too long to get to 2 bars. after you start driving, you still need to take it easy since it can take another 10-15 minutes to fully warm up the engine oil to normal operating temps.

The best way to warm up your engine whether it's winter or summer is to drive it gently. Sitting with your car idling to warm it up takes longer and is harder on the engine.

Also, the problem you're experiencing is the engine computer preventing you from revving the car too high before the engine is warmed up. Once the engine is warmed up you should have no problem taking it up to 9000.

Why wait until two bars? I let it idle for about 15 seconds or so and then I'm off, but keep the revs down quite a bit and don't get on the throttle very hard either.

Be nice to the poor car! Would you like it if someone woke you up and forced you to run sprints immediately? Would you try your best to please the person?

No. At least I wouldn't. The cpu will not allow you to rev it past 7,000 when the temp guage is under three bars.
