(I tried this question at "Under the Hood" but got no replies. I'll try again here.)
When I start my s2k up in cold weather, the engine surges to about 3500 rpm on its own and oscillates up and down a few times back to normal idle speeds. It just started doing that, but it's the first time the car has seen 40 degrees F.

Anyone have similar experience? Remedies?

 

i sorta have that problem too, but my main concern is that it will barely roll over at all in cold weather morning starts, its like the battery is about to die on me, in other words, it takes a long time to start the car, do you have that problem?

 

It's not a problem ........... the computer/engine is just doing what it was supposed to do in cold weather. Cold weather starts have been this way for a long time. Hand chokes used to be common before WWII, then automatic chokes on the carburetor, and now your ECU takes care of it. A jump to 2,000 RPMs is not uncommon and you should what for the RPMs start to come back down before driving.

When starting the car in cold weather, do not touch the gas pedal, turn the key on and wait about 10 seconds, and the hit the start button. This gives the sensors time to collect info and send it back to the ECU to make the proper settings for cold starts.

 

If that was the "first" time it's seen these sorts of temps, then this is NOT "abnormal". In a few more such cold starts, it should "learn" and be more reasonable (~2000 rpm) and stabilize. If it doesn't then you might have a sensor problem.
