Found out a little bit more info - the stuff from McMaster-Carr is made by Singer Safety Company, and is called "Sound Stopper" vibration damper . . . not much to see on Singer's website, but I found another site that has a page on the product. Nothing much that we didn't already know, but still interesting.

Dunno about the dye idea. But I'm sure you can paint it after it's applied if you want.

Tested out the Sound Stopper vibration damper - spread some on a scrap piece of galvanized stove piping, let it cure for a couple days. Then last night I tossed it in the oven to see what happened at higher temps - 10 minutes on the "warm" setting, 20 minutes @ 200 degrees, and another 20 minutes @ 250 degrees . . . . it was fine - didn't get the least bit soft.

So there certainly won't be any problems with interior application, even on the hottest days. And it could even work on heat shields above the muffler(s) - although you might want to test it at higher temps than I did to find out for sure.

Vibration damping is not soudproofing, although it may do some. The approaches used are different. There is a reason it is cheaper, it is not the same. Are there any lab measurments on it?

Put some McMaster-Carr Sound Stopper down in my Prelude over the weekend . . . . did ~2.5 gallons for the trunk, rear seats, and entire floor.

Back to back measurements with a stripped interior showed a 1.3 dB improvement at idle, and a ~.75 dB improvement at speeds 35, 45, and 70mph . . .

Here's the raw data I took if you're interested. Check my thread here on po.com (you'll need a membership) if you're interested in the details & my testing methodology.

It hasn't fully dried/cured yet, so it's probable those numbers will improve some. I think it will also be a more drastic difference with the interior & rear seats reinstalled, since it's blocking out different frequencies than the interior does.

I applied 3.5 coats in the trunk (3 all over, and and extra coat under the spare tire tool set). I drove all the way from Indy to Florida. I noticed a slight difference maybe, but if someone did it and didn't tell me, I probably would not have noticed. Of course I have the Invidia, so my car tends to be a hair louder..........

soundproofing the trunk is definitely overrated in terms of drone control.

Actually, the trunk, done properly, will eliminate a lot of the drone. That is what my R&D was all about. As I've said before, it's a combination of materials that works. There is no magic bullet here. If you want Quiet Coat only, I can sell it to you for less than the factory price. I don't want to violate thread rules here, so pm me for more info. And remember, when you change the airbox, the intake resonance can be brutal, and without a hardtop all that noise goes right over the hood.

Chip, are you including the tray/sparetire area as part of the trunk? If so, this is the major source of drone coming from behind the seats. The trunk is a bust for drone.

We do treat the spare tire area and the tray, however, with the tray removed, most of the drone in the trunk area should still be eliminated if properly done. I spent a year figuring this out. You've got to get the high and low frequencies eliminated, and the referred sound. That one is the hard part. Now, THAT kind of knowledge will cost you. Don't dis Quiet Coat, it works great but is only part of the equation.

After reading this post I had to try this myself. I've got to say this stuff is GREAT! I applied it under the carpets, behind the seats, under the top tray, the entire trunk, and a few choice places under the car with 3 coats and it did make a dramatic difference! It's hard to imagine that it will make any difference as you're appliting it but it really works well.

Being an old guy I was getting tired of commuting 80 miles a day in the S because of all of the road noise and I was seriously considering selling it. But a quick search brought up this thread and I had to try it.

Long story short; I ordered some QuietCar on-line and waited. A week went by and I hadn't heard a word from QuietCar, and the product hadn't arrived so I called them. They told me that they didn't have any 1 gallon jugs in stock (plenty of material, just no jugs to ship it in, and that it would be another 2-3 weeks). I told them how I felt about their customer service (they should have notified me) and cancelled my order. Then I ordered 2 gallons of black e-dead. The next morning I got a call from a manager at QuietCar appologizing for the inconvenience and a gallon was on the way no charge. They over-nighted it too. I received the QuietCar before the e-dead and ended up finishing the project about the time the e-dead arrived.

So I now have 2 gallons of e-dead that need to find a new home. If anybody is interested see my add in So Cal "for sale".

I honestly can't believe how good this stuff works! I now hear mostly wind noise, and other cars, and my the stock resonator-less exhaust actually sounds better as I can hear the exhaust from behind the car and not through the trunk.
