faster=better mpg
When I was living in Seattle, I drove to Vancouver many times (3 hour drive). Going 60-65, I'd get about 24-26mpg. There were a couple of times where I went 80-85 the whole way and got around 32 (!!). And I'm supercharged.
faster doesn't always mean better mpg, but it can
for all you saying going above 55 will definately decrease your mpg, you are wrong
mpg is a factor of speed, rpm (engine speed), position of throttle, and drag..
for example, go 30 in 6th gear, and I guarantee you will get less mileage than driving at 60 mph? Why? Because 30mph in 6th, you are practically bogging the engine and you need more throttle to keep the car going.
For this reason, the s2000 does experience better mpg over 55, but there is a point at which you do begin to sacrifice mpg

You guys also need to consider the other factors such as humidity, temperature, elevation, fuel formulas, traffic density, etc.
My best MPG in the S2000 was a trip with the cruise set at 85 for hundreds of miles. That trip I encountered almost nothing to make me adjust speed, thus, great MPG. All things being equal, I would have gotten better MPG making the exact same trip at 60 MPH.

I, being in high school physics, can tell you that if you drive twice as fast you will get there in half the time (obivously!)... But you would have used four times the energy (power) to get there...
So no, driving faster may get you there quicker but it will take more power to do so...

I went from Lompoc to Ventura to Lompoc (180miles...averaging about 75-80 mph) and got about 27.8mpg. I attribute it to drafting my friend's STi because I get sh*tty mileage with my current set up...AEM intake, Invidia Cat, Invidia V3, Tire pressures: 33 rear 37 front
