short distance travelling definately puts you in the severe category, i bet a few of us are really in the "normal" category with all the traffic and extreme temps we have in the states.

change the oil at 3750 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. oil CAN go bad after some time, it can take in moisture and get oxidized. after that change the oil out every 2k-3k miles at 3 months, whichever comes first. an oil change is the cheapest and most effective insurance you can have for any car.

I split the difference and did my first change around 5k miles. I rationalized this based on some mileage being from daily stop-and go, but the other half was highway.

I change all of my cars at 5k intervals. Using Mobil 1 that's probably still overkill. The 3k change interval is marketing hype from the Jiffy Lube-type quick oil change industry.

Y'all heard the news about the car designed by women, for women? Volvo has it in planning. 30K mile oil changes - essentiually maintenance free. When it does need service, it uses wireless to contact the service facility. Now all they need is someone to drive for them. Women buy something like 60% of alol new cars - amazing how it changed in two generations!

Am I the only one who's planning on changing the oil every 7,500 miles, like the manual recommends?

I think I'll change mine tomorrow, along with the differential oil at 1000 miles. Then I'll get on the 3750 mile schedule. I plan to eventually go to synthetic oil with 5K intervals after I'm convinced the engine is broken-in.
