Default first oil change: 3750 or 7500?

bought my s new 4 months ago. mild climate. a few 100-mile pleasure cruises. daily commute 3 miles each way to work, putting me under the "severe" schedule. normally, can't hurt to change the oil more often, even under good conditions. but factory oil has special additives. should i preserve those additives for the first 7500 miles? or, given my short commute, dump the factory oil after only 3750?

You seem to have forgotten the time interval - doesn't your service schedule mention miles AND time interval, whichever comes first?

I get my car in two days, and I plan to change the oil at 1000 miles, to ensure than any casting grit and other contaminants are out of there. I will be adding the same sort of additive that Honda uses (molybdenum) which allows metal high points (asperites) to be worn off, rather than chipped off. The product I am using is specifically made not to coat, and is called "Break-in" by Mr. Moly, trade name for products made by Am-Can Chemicals, Inc in Canada. You can find it through Google and order online - mine was delivered very quickly.

I think that is a fine idea - if there are metal sand particles, casting flask, and shards of the asperites, they probably got caught by the filter, but under repeated flow cycles, esp at startup when the oil pressure and "surge" of thick cold oil is high, it is possible that those little metal gremlims could cut through the paper filter element, and do naughty things - I do not think the "makeup" oil you would need to add is critical.

I vote

And since I drive relatively few miles (this is our 4th car - aint this a great country or what) I almost always time out rather than mile out. So using Amsoil ATM (10w30) I go for a year, with a filter change and makeup oil added at 6 months, no matter what.

I would change the oil at 3500. But I didn't buy mine new, so I hope that the previous owner did that...

Yes, those 250 miles can make all the difference.
