Forbes S2000 vs. Miata
The new MX-5 is a great car...but it still lacks the HP to compete. That thing handles on par with the S, if not better. The power band is very linear, it accelerates like the RX-8, torque comes in very low which is nice for the daily drive. Interior space is a little better than the S, door "bottle" holders are VERY nice. Sound system in the GT model owns the S' system.
All in all, its a great car. But the sheer driving excitement factor isn't like the S'. Plus...the look isn't for everyone, and it's still a Miata, rebadged with the MX-5.
I used to sell Mazdas

I own both a Miata and an S and there really is no comparison tween the 2. The great parts about the Miata, and there are some, just don't compensate for the feel of the S.
As to the new MX5 I don't know how anyone can call it a performance car in it's present configuration. The suspension reminds me of the older Z4 - made from rubber bands. In every head to head test it comes out way behind the last generation Miata in handling. They changed the rear suspension to a 5 point instead of the older true IRS.
Now, once the Mazdaspeed version comes out the handling should improve.
I HATE the looks of the new Miata and love the second gen. The new one looks like a first gen Miata (the little girly looking car with the pop up headlights) mated with an RX8 and it got the worst features of both.
I never even considered buying a Miata until they changed the styling in 99.
I was buying an 02 Miata (that would have been my 2nd Miata) when I accidentally ended up with my S. I ended up getting my S for $500 less than I could get the Miata I'd ordered (special internet only model). Plus when Mazda shipped the one I'd ordered there'd been a change in the interior, the dash was black on top and tan on bottom. I hate that 2 tone look. Give me black or give me tan, don't mix em.
